THE TEMPERANCE POLITICAL COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the Temperance Political Committee was held in the lowei Choral Hall on Saturday evening, when there was a very large attendance. New delegates were enrolled from the North- West Harbour Prohibition League, Rqiltd Prohibition League, South Dunedio Prohibition League, Kaikorai Band of Hope, and the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners. The following wa* unanimously adopted as the platform of the committee. 1. That the efforts of the committee be confined strictly to temperance work. 2. To support and endeavour to return and, If necessary in the interests of the party, to nominate for the House of Representatives canAldktea of mm worth, who »ra with this pact?
in prinoipls and who will pledge themselves to the legislative platform of the party, as follows :— (rt) To suggest and in every honourable way to endeavour to secure the amendment of the law to bring clubs under the popular vote in the same manner as publicans licenses. (6) To provide for a colonial vote for prohibition, and for giving effect to tlie same. (c) To give the electors the right, by majority vote at the polls, to decide all questions as to the continuance or abolition of the liquor traffic. 3. To advocate and take measures to secure an effective vote for "No license," and failing I;hat, a reduction vote at the local option polls, and with that object to urge the elector, to strike out the top line only on their voting p *pers. 4. In the event of reduction only being carried at tbe local option poll*, to nominate and support as candidates for the Licensing Onmauttee men of integrity, who will pledge themselves to make the maximum reduction in licenses allowed by law. 5 To take any necessary steps to promote the interests of temperance reform within the sphere of its operations. 6. That the sphere of operations of this committee be the electorates of Dunedin, Oaversham, and Chalmers. The executive was requested to prepare a scheme of finauoe, to be submitted at a future meeting of the committee ; that the aext meeting of the committee shall be held on the last Saturday in May ; thai; the officers get copies of the platform printed and circulated among the delegate-* to the committee.
