WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of this county council was held in the County Council Chambers, Hawksbury, on Friday last, a 1 which there were present— The Chairman (Mr W. J. Bolt), and Crs A. Graham, J. Green, M.H.R., J. Potteous, A. S. Orbell, and W. Souter. , PETITIONS. Mr T. AUcock and five other ratepayers in the Hawksbucy riding petitioned the oouncil urging that certain repairs ba effected on the road leading to their small grazing tuns. — The council decided to call for tenders at once, and authorised the chairman to aocept same. Mr John Maxwell and four other ratepayers petitioned the council calling attention to the necessity of spreading some mMnteuance'gr-tve] on Clark's road in the Hawksbury riding*. — The application to be granted as soon as the weather is suitable for carrying out the work.

Mr A. Miller and eight other ratepayers petitioned the council calling attention to th« state of the upper portion of the Port Chalmers road, as it was very much out of rspair, from tha junction to Mr -Miller's lower boundary. — Referred to the West Harbour Borough Council with a reqnest to attend to the necessary repairs as soon a? possible.

Mr A. Donald and four other r*tep»yers petitioned the oouncil to improvo part of the Round Hill road, commencing near the northwest corner of Mr A. Contract No. 85.— The Inspector reported that the contractor had not commenced work in connection with this contract, the time allowed having ♦expired — The council allowed seven days to commence and carry on the cjdtract to completion, failing which tho dopo«it to be forfeited and inspector instructed to offer the contract to the next lowest tenderer, and failing his acceptance frenh f-onriars to b9 called for the work. CORRESPONDENCE. The Commissioner of Taxes, Wellington, wrote drawing attention to the action of the Auditor-general declining to pass vouohor* for advance* on account of subsidy on the ground that the resolution of tbe local body making the rate did not specif j the particular section of the act under which it was struck, and requesting compliance' with the law on the subjeot — Received, and effect to be given to the recommendation. The Secretaries of the Charitable Aid and H .saifcal Boards, Dunedio, wrote requesting payments to be continued ou the old basis until the full returns had baen reoeived and the alloc&tious for the curreat year made, — Request to ba complied with.

Mr John D >uglM, Mount Royal, wrote enclosing partioulara of roads which he considered required urgently-needed repM-s. He added that seeing the council had received about £800 in rates from the Mount R>yal estate, after crediting amount expended, he hoped steps would be taken to m*ke amends for past neglect, and pointed out that he had be<sn piying rates for the patt 25 years, including road boards and county council. — The Council resolved — " That having considered Cr Orbell's report as well as Me DougUs's letter, yttxtt 1 and 2 of his apple ifcion be attsnded to at once, provided that Mr Doughs supply a team and plough to assist where required; that p%tts 3 and 4 bo referred to the inspector for a report as to coat of same, and that part 5 must be deolinod, and part 6 deferred for the present." The Treasury, Wellington, wrote drawing attention to the necessity of retains of expenditure And revenue being forw*rdcd in duplicate on or before the 14th June in every year. —The request to be complied with.

Patterson, surveyor, Dunedin, forwarded plan of proposed road exchange throogh Mr C. Barith's property, L^wer Harbour. — Th«s council decided to take the neceiiary steps to advertise the plan open for inspection.
