Otago Witness Problem and Solution Tourneys.

With the vi-w of aiding the cause of cheES and stiinulsthig local tideut, the proprietors of the Witness have decided to arrange a problem and solution tourney, and, should it prove a success, to follow it up with other like tourneys, so as to have at least three annually. The first will bo a competition of two-move problems, open to all problem composers in New Zealand. tions from beyond New Zealand, because of tho delay which would thus be caused, Problems intended for competition in the first tourney must be-s*nt to the chess editor of the Witness not later than the 30th of April next. The problems must be original compositions which nave never been published. Each competitor muat send in the problem he Intends for competition plainly diagrammed, and also, whenever possible, with, the position stated ia the Forsyth notation. Each composer must adopt for himself a motto, by which alone he will be Known until after the adjudication, and when sending his problem or problems he must send his real name and address in a sealed envelope marked outside with the motto, which will be retained unopened untfi after the adjudication. Two problems from each composer will be accepted. Competent judges will be appointed to adjudicate.

In the solution tourney one point will ba awarded for a correct solution, two points for a second solution, or, as it is technically called, a " cook" ; and three points to whoever discovers that a position is not original, or has been previously published. In the succeeding tourney the number of point* gained by all others but the prize-taker will be carried forward to their credit in the nexfc competition, and thus in such competition the prizetaker in fcha previous competition and new competitors will start at zero, so that in course of time everyone who competes will have a chance of gaining a prize. In the event of the first tourney proving a success the second competition will be in threemove problems. The right of modifying any of the above conditionß or of adding others is reserved, and also the right to extend, the time for receiving competing problems should a sufficient number not come to hand before the above-mentioned date. All problems sent in for .competition will bs published in the Witness In the order in which they are received, or as nearly so as may be found practicable.
