ACCIDENT ON THE ALAMKDA. .
r . Auckland, April 25.— The following are the of the accidents on the A lamed a:— &txrat two days before arriving at Apia one of the (trailer tubes gave way, necessitating steam being Blown off and, practically speaking, causing a stoppage to the vessel's progress. The d«y prejsioui to the Island of Upolu being sighted a pylinder of ammonia gas among the cargo in the Jforehold exploded, and the fumes arising therefrom completely prostrated some of the men in pc forecastle. Fortunately they were rescued before animation ceased, but they are even now goffering from the effects of asphyxiation. On pfoeday morning last, at 5 30 o'clock, the steam jpipe burst in the steameT, filling the compartment Snth steam and causing consternation amongat ■the passengers, who wete mostly in their bunks. aThe explosion caused by tbe bursting pipes aroußed all hands. One of the steerage (passengers had a . narrow escape from Scalding. • he being just under the pips jwhsn the accident occurred. It cleared the of Its inhabitants, all making a record Ascent of the gangway; No damage was done, fortunately, except the saturating of the bedding iy the condensed ste*tn. The steerage steward's IHackets) promptitude and the smartness of one the pascengers in getting theat«*m shot off was greatly commended.
