AMERICAN MAIL SUBSIDY.

The United States Soaate Committee agreed on March 30 to increase the appropriation for the transportation of foreign mails by 80,000dol, and it is accompanied by the following provision :— " Additional compensation to the Oceanic Steamship Company for the transportation of mails by its steamers sailing from San Francisao to New Zealaud aud New South Wales, via Honolulu, for all mails made up in the United States destined for the Hawaiian Islands, the Australian colonies, New Caledonia, and the islands in the Pacific Ocean, 80,000dol 5 provided the additional lum with the sum now paid »hall not exceed 2dol per mile, as authorised by the act of March 3, 1891." Recurring to the ooenn mail mbsidiea on April 1 there was a spirited debate in the United States Senate. Senator Vilae, referring to the proposed addition of 80,000doL subsidy to the Oceanic steamship line from San Francisco to Hawaii and other Pacific points, denied that the service would be cut off if the addition were not mitde. Senator Perkins said thoy were paying lees in subsidies than New Zealand.
