The general fund in Wellington, exclusive of the above and including the Evening Fo3t list, exceeds £2000. . ? The collecting - of subscriptions for the Brunner relief fond was referred to at the meeting of West. -Harbour Borough Council last night, ' whenitiwas decided that the matter be left in the -hands of) the town clerk (Mr D. L«rn*ch) to advertise and act. ■ ■ As s there is no lecal body at Waihi, Auckland, to promote the -Brunnerton relief fund, a list was started by the W»ihi Miner, but up to 1 the 7th inst. only one guinea was subscribed, ' and that was the editor's own subscription. A Melbourne cable states that the Stock Exchange voted £50 to tbe Brunner fund. The treasurer of the Christchurch relief fund has up to date acknowledged £3467 15s 6d. In tbe town of Oamaru £283 has been collected so far. At Kurow a ooneert realised £25 for the fund. At a committeemeetingof the Gaelic Society, held on the 15th at tbe Stuart street Hall, the sum of £5 was voted to the Brunner relief fund and £1 to another charity. At the meeting of the Dunedin Burns Club on the 15th it was decided to vote £5 5s to the fund. s The Tapanui contribution to the f and bo far amounts to £56 8s 6d. Mr M. Batty, of Goal Creek, has drawn the attention of the Premier *9 the feet that than
is not a single miner on the coroner's jury at the inquiry at Brunnerton. The Premier agrees it would have been better to have had some miners on the jury. The Christchuroh Press says: "While animated, no doubt, by the best of motive*, the Brunnerton committee seem to have been a little reckless in their method of dealing with the funds in hand. We hear, for example, of somewhat heavy lump sums being handed over for the purchase of expensive mourning." The Amateur Athletic Carnival hold at Auckland on the 15&h in aid of the Brunnerton relief fund was a great success. His Excellency tho Governor and family were present. The proceeds are expected to reach close ou £200. A A. Brody put up a record of 14 win 12 3-ssec for the Two-mile Walk. M'Eean won the 440 yds event, after a dead heat with Oliphant. There were 23 starters in the Chinese race, which caused great amusement. The Hon. W. Swanson and Mr Crowther have collected £116 for the Brunner fund in Auckland. At Christchurch ou Thursday a - sports gala in aid of the Brunner fund was held at Lancaster Park. About four thousand people were present. The Tramway Company will give the whole of its takings during tha afternoon to the fund. The programme included cycling and athletic events, swimming races, fire brigade competitions, and a fancy costume football inatoh. Ths net result will be abiut £170. The employees of the Southland section of the New Zealand railways have raised among themselves the handsome sum of £73 7a 8d for the relief fund. Sir Frederick Sargood has cabled to his firm here from Melbourne expressing his sympathy with those bereaved by the disaster in the Bruu- ; ncr mine, and instructing tba f £50 on bis private account be given to tbe relief fund in addition to the £50 given by the firm. i Mrs Napier B&ll begs to thank tho Orchestral Society, the Liedertafel, and the ladies and gentlemen who kindly assisted her on Friday, the 10th, at tbe concert in aid of the Brunnerton relief fund. She also begs to thank ths trustees of the Garrison Hall for the use of the hall, the City Corporation for the gas, Messrs Wilkie and Co. for printing tickets, the Dresden Company for the use of their Brard grand piano, the City Tram Company for posting handbills, Messrs Howden and Mencrieff foe flowers, and the public who so generously responded to her appeal. Total proceeds, £123 3s, including £8 seat by the nuns of the Dominican Convent, their bonders, and the Children of Mary, £3 19s ot which, represents tickets, Ihe balance (£4 Is) being a donation to the fund. Exp r naes (printing, &c), £5 15* 6d. Balance,, £117 7s 6d, to be handed over to the Brunnerton relief fund. ' Mr G. L. Denniston, the hon. treasurer, supports a suggestion by Mr Stead, treasurer of the Canterbury fund, that as enough money has been sent to Brunnerton to supply present needs all funds should be retained in the hands of, say, the Central Coaimitte'e until a scheme for distribution is approved. Some districts, and even some firms in Otsgo have sent subscriptions direct, which partly accounts for the seeming disadvantageous* position occupied by Otago as compared with other parts of the colony. Another reason for concentrating the Otago subscriptions in thf hands of the Dunedin committee is that the fund can be added to by depositing the money as collected in the bank and getting interest theron At present the Dunedin committee have £1600 in the Bank of New Zealand as a fixed deposit. So far the Mosgiel people have subscribed' £47 3s. • . The amount collected at Palmeraton North is £205, and several lists have yet to come in. Of this sum the Munawahu Daily Times collected £55. The lists close on the 30th inst. A Wellington telegram states that; the Biunner reliel fund now amounts to £2200. The North Otago subscriptions so far amount to £372. Up to the prerent £550 has been col'ected at Napier for the Bruuner huft nr», v.'tli niauy 'country lists yet to come iv. T>.<.i« wi'l bt a demonstration on the 29th in»t. lor Ibe fund. The Napier railway employees have forwarded £59 8* 3d through the National Bank to Greytnouth. A retiring collection at Trinity Wesleyan Church on Sunday last, taken up as the congregation were leaving the church, realised £9 Is 9d for the Brunnerton relief fuud. A Christchurch telegram says: — "At the Friendly Societies' gathering on Saturday in aid of the Br.unner fund the sum of £23 was collected. A resolution was carried that it be recommended to the Government that the first issue of the Humane Society's medals be made to Mr Seddon and the miners who risked their lives in an endeavour to rescue the entombed men."
