Charles Laweon.— Mr Charles Lawaon, champion of Providence, Rhode Island, U.S A., who has kindly favoured us with a problem in this column, is a player of no mean order. At the last annual meeting of the New England Checker Arsociation, held in Boston on February 22, he met and defeated such heavy guns as Parrow, Oliver, and Bugbee. _, The Gore Tournament.— Entries closed last Wednesday for the championship of Southland. The entry list may not be considered a large one, but when the calibre of the entrants is considered, a tough contest may be anticipated. The following is the list :— — Matheson, Tapanui J. Hannah, Otautau A. Smith, Tapanui W Harrison, Pukeran W. ¥. Sim, Crookston J. Beecot, Mandevillc C. Souuess, Edendale J. A. Scott, Gore T. Aysoa, Wyndham W. M'Kenna, Go» % H. Morris, Invercareil) J. Mulvey, Gore Play will have started ere this appears. It woald bo a difficult matter to say wbg will hold first honours, but Invercargill should* not be far away.
