LADIES' CHALLENGE SHIELD.
The twentieth competition for the Ladies' Challenge Shield was held at Pelichet Bay rifle range on Saturday, the winners turning up in the North Dunedin Rifles team, with last year's holders (B Battery New Zealand Artillery) second, 12 points behind. Only seven teams entered this year, none of the country corps being represented, no doubt on account of the withdrawal of free passes over the railways. The weather was very similar to that when last year's competition was fired, the light being very changeable and a gusty wind blowing dowa the. range. The uncertainties of rifle shooting were well exemplified in the results, the Port Chalmers Naval Artillery team appearing to have the match well in hand till the last range was fired, when their downfall was utter and complete, one representative never finding the target at all. On the other hand, the Artillery, coming back to 600 yds with almost; the lowest score, started so well as to give the CFsftfrß»] ninam m wwuquo &§U bout mi
I finished second. The City Guards, who are re» I puted to have the strongest team of five io I Dunedin and whose chances of winning were considered very good, were unfortunate in nob having three of their team arrive until over an hoar after the time far their lorn to fire, and were consequently compelled to retire, Thf« year the conditions of the competition were changed from those previously in force, the weapon being the Martini-Henry rifle and tht ranges 200, 500, and 600 yards. Captain Montgomery, Lieutenant Strong, and Lieutenant Baron acted as range officer*, and the match generally went off very smoothly, there being neither complaints nor disputes.
