THE CHRISTCHURCH MEETING.

By M. Quad. April 6. Tha weather fiend was still threatening to favour Chriatchurch with more rain this morning, and this, together with a cold, biting wind, must have kept many people from journeying t« Riccarton. However, after the Hurdle Race had been decided, the sun broke through, the wind blew from a warmer quarter, and the rest of the afternoon was very pleasant. Obviously the course was somewhat heavy, but improved wonderfully as the day advanced. Considering that the attendance was not nearly so large as it would have been bad the atmospheric conditions been more favourable, speculation waß fairly good, the sum of j£Z243 being invested daring the day. The racing was particularly good, and the finish in "the Epsom Welter was most exciting. B.irnardo and Liberator were selected as the geod things for the Kildare Hurdle Race, whikt Clarence was compa-atively neglected. Baxnardo cleared the first hurdle just in advance of Hopeful, the other two (Clarence and Liberator) close up. At the stand Liberator was leading, in which position he remained right round to the kennels, six furlongs from borne. Entering the straight Hopeful ran up to Butler's horse, and cantering over his opponents, ran home hard held from Clarence, who defeated Barnardo on the post for second honours. The pace was sound, as the time (3m in 32sec) shows, and the dividend of £5 was more than the warmest supporters expected. Six two-year-olds, of whom Bombshell was made au even-money chance, contested th« Champagne. Marquis of Zetland was fractious at the post. Whea the tapes flew up Bombshell and Belle Clair were quickest to get on their feet, and Dauntless the slowest. Mr Stead's colt was pulled back, and Dauntless at the top turn was just in advance of Firefly and Belle Ciair, with Bombshell leading the others at the distance. All were riding hard, Derrett doing all he knew an Bombshell. The latter headed Dauntless, who quickly cried enough, as also did Belle Clair. Opposite the stand TJniform, who had been lying almost last, came with a great run, a- also did Firefly, but Bombshell, gamely struggling, just laated long enough to beat his stable-mate, Uniform, by a long neck. Firefly was only a head behind" Uniform. Mr Stead thus provided the three placed horses. Uniform could have won had he tried earlfer, and he was, besides, the fittest youngster of the lot. Th& Great Easter Handicap furnished a fine contest right up to the distance, the whole of tha 18 stswters, with the exception of Jane Eyre and Sol.taire, who were left badly, being in a heap, three furlongs from home. At the top turn Culver'm ran through, Golden Fleece, Au Revofr, Vanilla, and Solitaire (who had made up her ground at a great pace) next. Culverin kept in front right down the straight, Vanilla and Maremma not being able to reach the Son-of-a-gun filly, who won by a length and a-half from VanilUj Maremma a neck away third. Jane Eyre dis^pp. inted her connections, as although she appeared to be catching the field at the bottom of the straight she died away, and finished just ia front of Skirmisher, who was last New Forest seemed unable to foot it at any portion of tbe journey although vigorously ridden b> Connop, •nd Bloodshot was never prominent Tae same m*y be said of Black and Red, Rangiatea (who looked well), Colebeck, Bessie Macarthy, Marino, and Quiltiri. Culverin paid £16 2s, and ran the distance in lmin 30isec— good galloping considering tbe heavy going. Barmby was withdrawn and Kent and Ilex were scratched foi the Epsom Welter, and Bellicent and Cannonshot were made favourites. Old Prime Warden looked well enough, but he has evidently lost all form, as he waa but little backed, and his position in the race justified tae betting. At the start Medicus dislodged hfs rider. Bellicent, Prime Warden, King Wai, and Alceatis were prominent for half a mile, the latter leading into the straight. Half-way down, however, Cannonthot had t*kea command ; "Prime Warden last. Nicholas was prominent here, but Cannoashot shook him off, only to ba challenged by Bellicent, and these two were being hard ridden 60 yards from home. Mr Stead's mare at last got her head in front and won by a h-ad from Cannonnhot, with Lord of Misrule, who finished air a great pace, a nee* away, third. • - - 1 .Trentalto was looked upon as a good thing for the Russley Stakes ; but the scratching of Firefly gave backers the cue to support Grand Cross, ft line upstanding Medallion — Marion colt, who gave Derrett a rather uncomfortable ride. Marquis of Zetland was again unruly at the post, but he got away well, as also did Grand Cross, Trent«ilto dose up. White was hard at the Perkin Warbeck It colt all the way, and he got to the judge a length in front of Grand Cross, with Trentalto third. BelleC!ai' <tid not start. Bizarre and Ilex vrere selected »b almost equal "morale" for the Sockburn Handicap. Mona showed up for the first six furlongs, Toxa »nd Regret her nearest attendants, Bizarre bringing up. the rear. Once in the line for home the lastnamed ran through, but Vaodyke was alongside her, and galloping strongly easily def-ated Bizarre, after whom came Mona ; Brin lsut. The day's racing was brought to a conclusion by Fire King winning tha Gimcrack Race in a caater from Frenchy and three others. Second Day. The second d»y's racing at Riccarton waa much n>ore interesting as a whole than that of the first day. The attendance was larger, the fine weather tempting many who were kept away on Monday by the elements. Money was plentiful and dividends fair. The Hurdle Race resolved itself • into a battle between Hopeful and Barnardo, the others not having anything ta do with the finish. Halfway up the straight Hopeful was just in advance of Barnardo and Clarence, with Liberator last. A ding-dong finishing run ended ift a dead heat between Hopeful and Barnardo, with Clarence five lengths away. This was one of the finest finishes I have ever seen. The scratching of Uniform for the Autumn Nuraery gave backers the tip, and Firefly, who had run third in the Champagne, was selected as the good thing. The Artillery filly 6nallv won easily from Bellee.lair, whilst Marquis of Zetland was close up third. Trentalto, who was evidently sore, failed to sustain her North Island reputation, and finished absolutely last. The others finished in a bunch, four lengths away from the third horse. Marino was the only one scratched for the Ureat Autumn. Skirmisher was undouhtp<lly the best-looking of the 11 starters but hi- periorminces were too bad to give him a chance. Spindrift looked light, and although he appears game enough, he is too slightly built to lead anyone to suppose he had ever been able to win over a distance He has an ugly-looking leg, and so, by-the-way, has his itable companion Trentalto. Bessie Macarbhy is unsound, and though she looked well she pulled up lame. Strathbraan has filled out a good deal, and was in front for a mile. Lady Zetland did not look so bad, but she was never dangerous in the race. Quiltiri failed to run up to his track form, as aleo did Jang Eyre, who was whispered

round as the best of good things. New Forest was thought by many to ba better than BeHicent, aud Black and Red disgraced himdelf entirely. The running needs little description. Strathbraan was immediately taken to the front, and led Eellicent, Oulverin, and Beeeio Macarthy by a length right round to the top of the straight. Jana Eyrewaß going well on the outeide of the second division, Skirmisher, Quiltiri, and Spindrift close up. Culverin shot to the front a quarter of a mile from home, and at the same time Ballicont, going strongly, ranged alongside the Easter Handicap winner, whilst Bessie Macarthy and New Forest were side by side, a length away. At the distance Bellicent had beaten Culverin, and New Fojeat, disappointed in an effort to get up between Bessie Macar'hy and Culve>in, could get no nearer than f mrth, a head behind Mr Gollau's mare; whilst BuUicent got to the line a length and a-half in front of Culveria, Bellicent won easily, and, judging by the run made by New Forest, the Newminator horse Is, I should say, able to stay. Bombshell, Epaulet, Dauntless, and Ruatio were the only starters for the Challenge Stakes, and, of course, the Champagne Stakes winner was favourite. When the tapes went up "Dauntlesi rushed to the front, and there remained by a length from Epaulet and Bombshell right up to the distance, Rustic badly beaten a hundred yards from borne. Loud shouts proclaimed Dauntless as the winner, but before the sound of his name had died on the speakers' lips, the air was rent with cries of 'Epaulet if "BumbshslH" " Dauntless I " The whip was being freely applied to all. and Epaulet gradually canght Dauntless, who waa on the rail, whilst Bombshell, on the outside, was creeping up inch by inch. To the majority it looked as near a treble dead heat as it waa possible to imagine, but the judge g«ve his decision in favour of Dauntless, Epaulet second, and Bombshell third. Of course, the judge ia the only person able to decide, and as hi had the assistance of a steward ia the box the decision is probably correct, but if ever £1090 was thrown away it waa in the Challenge Stakes to-day. Bombshell could have won easily in my opinion, and whilst I do not wish to belittle the performance of Mr Ommnd's colt, that gentleman was decidedly lucky to capture the r eh stake.

Fifteen started in the Templeton Handicap, and little space will be required to describe the race. Vanilla was quickest away, followed by Maremma and Solitaire, and these positions were maintained to the finish, the vanguard filly winning all out by a Jength and a-half from the bearer of the Zetland spots, Solitaire a head behind Maremma. Rangiatea won the Addington Plate by a Beck from Miss Orwell, the rest nowhere, and was sold to Mr Boyle for £50. The Final Handicap was contested by nine, and after Lord of Misrule and Vandyke had carried on the ruaning for six furlongs, Bkck and Red and Jane Byre fought their southern battle over again, hut Mr Mercer's colt won easily by two lengths from the gray mare, who was a length in advance of Bizarre.

Bookmakers were escorted off the course to-day, owing to some of them being detected laying " tota " odds. ■ This seems rather arbitrary perhaps, but the pencilled were given a chaaos, and the chance was abused. At the same tima it is the general opinion that it is rather hard on those who did not attempt to bet. The inquiry into the performances of Three Cheers resulted in the Lancaster Park stewards paying over the stakes to the owner of that horse, and completely exonerating Edwards. The same stewards intend to hold an inquiry int-j the conduct of a well known bookmaker and trainer whilst in the enclosure on Saturday last. RACING IN NEW ZEAI AND. RIVERTON RACES. The Riretton Racing Chib were favoured with perfect weather and ft l*rge Attendance for their Baiter races. The acceptances were I exceptional? good, there being no less than 70 for the eight events on the programme, and the scratching!! wore Few ; but with the exception of the two steeplechases, the racing was not of ! a very interesting character, while one or fcwo events bore suofj, a shtdy appearance that it i caused general surprise th^t the (JloWitrds-did not hold some inquiry into them ; notably the running of Dilemma in the River tab Handicap.
