The game below, which was well played by Mr Pollock, waaof a sensational character ; foy it was the first lo.it by Steinil/S, who was leading the score: he lost the leal and never lecovered it. The victory of the younger maiter was greeted with an exceptionally hearty outburst of cheering, which could not fail to have a decidedly depressing effect upon the loser. Anyhow, the veteian lost the next three games, mid finished fifth. Mr Pollock's management of this game dof^s not exhibit any remarkable brilliancy ; but by his superior strategy aud origiual combinations he sooa acquired a strong grasp of the position, which, after winning the exchange and forcing advantageous exchanges, enabled him to bring about au extremely neat mate in a pawn ending with a B and a Kfc :— Giuoco Piano.
