MOSSBURN.
October 8 —The weather is now redolent with the breath of spring, t-oit fresh leaves ou hedge and tree The grass in the fields is taking on a greener, fr^aher tinge ; the brown furrows, cowly upturned by the plough, smell fresh and sweet, as if glad to be released from the ice-king's thrall. The note of gladness in the air, the twitteoug of the happy, hopeful bird?, mingles harmonious-ly with the rush and ripple of the Oreti, which glide* joyously in its pbbly bed, as if it, too, loved the bresth of s-pring. Meteor —A beautiful meteor was observed on the eveniiig of the 6 h falling over the railway triangle Changes.— The Te Anau mails, which hive hitherto been carried by Mr Garvey, will for the future be in Mr Croub.e's care — Pure of the late Mr Macaul»y's estate has been purchased by a Mr D>sart, who, I hear, is to take potsssMuii at oiioe. The purchaser has been making a tour of Otago and Southland in *n»a**fth of land. <uu says he prefers this district t • >y he has se.-n. Stock Sales.— The .>.: c ->f stock was again postponed. This is disappointing to men who, during a bu»y seed-time, suspend work to muster, draft, and get ready their stock It is a pity some of the station owners do not open communication with a Riversdale firm of auctioneers, who, beiDg so much nearer, would bs able to give their services at less expense than an Invercargill firm. Our farmers cannot be accused of want of entsrpriut, as they have got material and erected yards at the railway station, which is often dove at the expense of the department. General. — Wo are reminded on every 6ide that we are on the downward grade, and the catalogue pre-etted at our tribunals goes fur to justify the accusation that "death in its awful form has become oui familiar." But here is a happier state of thing*. A farmer not many miles from here, on telling his barley to a city brewer 12 months ago. wss presented with a cask of beer, which fittiruls in his baru unbnached among toxi, Milestone, phosphorus, and kindred stuffs. Surely our ardent and enthusiastic prohibitionists cannot find f*ult with that.
Our Scenery.— The tourist season has already begun, and bids fair to equal that of last year.
