LAKE COUNTY.

October 12 —Cold and boisterous weather has b?en the order of the day, and on Wednesday last there was a h-avy downpour of rain, wh'ch was needed for most of the growing crops. Owing to the prt vailing low temperature the season is fully three or four weeks late. It is not a very rare occurrence to have r.ul-shes and rhubarb about the end of September, but we are near the middle of October and these vegetables are only just beginning to make their oppearance above ground, and so is it with most growths in gardens aud orchards as well as in fields. Why NoT?-There are at present six entire horses travelling in this district, all of which are above the average standard of what is generally eeen in up-country townships, and the idea of holding a walking show may be suggested to those interested. As there are both numbers and quality the show would not be a mean one, and would bring the horses directly under the eyes of fanners, who could select, the animal which in thsir fancy would suit their purposes be3t. As times have gradua'ly got worse, a lethargy ha- apparently crept over our farmers and miners. They would do well to shake this off, and the sooner the better. It would almost appear that even the projected Kingston railway extension wae powerfesi to rouae them out of their sleep. Invcrcarelll is showing quite a lively interest in the subject A preliminary meeting of residents was held to prepare the way for a large public meeting to fully di^uss the propofcA It is to b' hojie I that in' ca^e this district follow- suit soiiuth us more practical and butinefifc-like will result than obtained on so many former occasions. A Hint.— We have had the Princess Dramatic and Musical Stars with us, but not much either to our or their own benefit. It is pretty p'atn tLat times have changed, aud few psople have now the means to enable them to support travelling professionals, and us for the needs of chasing away dull care, the local amateur talent is just as effective a* the professional. Besides, the former have the further advantage of keeping the money |a the district. For this alone we look leniently

upon them and forgive them many of their little sins and idiosyncraciea. i
