Notes from Wakatipu. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
Areowtown, September 28.— Tile Victor Bin.* uianuel tributerg, Mccetown, continue to mnka fresh disco voried ia their mind. The latest flud ig a reef on the lunging wall of tha formation worked upon by the tributera. This lode, which ! is about 3ft wide, runs parallel with tho lodo on | the foot wall of tha same formation, and shows gold freely in the stone, which fs of a compact and 1 promising nature. This new lodo neems to bo of a uniform width, but not much moro can be Raid of its yielding capabilities at present tliau that the outl >ok is hopoful. Tho foot wall lodo which was struck about a month ago has now been driyoo I on 40ft, in tho course of which ifca width hns varied from 18in to 3ft 6io. The tributes nra now making arrangement* for stoning out, while iha main adit is being piwbxd ;>h«tud in soarch of more stono. Tho foot wall loilo fo far as op.Mied promises to yield rcturna that will pay tha tributora for their enterprise, and also cover ex* pcii£os for further developing the raxourccj of tho mine. Crushing haa fceon resumed, and is buiug koot going at full spoed. The improvements designed for tbo future working of the Achilles Goldflelds Company, Skippers, couiprwfl a large water race from tho left-luud branch of the Hhotover river todolivor the water at the minj to work dynamos generaI ting power for hauling and pumping purposes aud 1 also driving the battery by direct notion. Tho machinery for those purnosta— that is, an eleotria 1 hoist and three phmgor electric pumps— ara ordered Jn England to suptrsodo tho present aircompressing plant. B.:3iues thoso purposes the nosf race will serve ns a rannl for flouting down the mining timber, which 'ibuuiids tit tho head of tho left-hand branch. In tho mcftiitimo tho wutou iv tho mine is being steadily reduced, and it ia anticipated that in about a week's time underground operations can ba rammed : nnd as several fa osa of good payable siono ara randy to be started upon it will not be lon« before crushing will begin, and this, th« oldest; of our mines, will qnca more torao to the front with good cakes, aud it is to bo hoped will furuitth pi-oof of tho value of our quartz lodes for a lonfc timo to eomo. j VVorlc in th'j GUnrock Uomu^ny, Macetown, is being pushed aho*d with all pofasiblo speed. Au incline adit following the dip of tho golden shoot at its lower edge, io that all the golden stone can be easily stoned out, has been driven ttOff, and at there is hardly any water to contend with, it may be continue*! for almost any length, tho grade of dip being an easy one (2'3bdeg). Tho hauling plant is to be an electrical huuliiitf gear, and i 3 about to bo furai.-hed by the New 2?al*nd Engineering and Electric.il Cumpauy, Dnnedin. It is designed to raiae turae tons at tho rato of 40ft per lninnta. Thi<r mode of working tho mine, aided by the proposed plan* 1 , will command a largo supply of stnne of a highly pnyitiff quality, while the incline adit can go uho&d without interruption all the time, so as to keep up a constant supply of stone, allowtnjr of a large number of men being: employed. It ia anticipated th.»t cru<thin.£ with 20 heudfj will begin about tho 1 l»t of November next, and, if required, the Sunrise 10-be*d battery will also bo sot in motion. Tho dyntmo for working the olcctiicul hauling plaut will be driven by the present water supply at the battery. The Tippcrary Company, Macotown, have now reached the 1700 ft peg with their low level adit, which is still 2110 ft short of tho point where it is expected stove in paying quantities will be struck, and when this anticipation is realltcd there will 1 baa bright future bufoio this company, and tha old days of cakes of 1001/oz etich may once moio dawn upon it. ! The Leviathan Company, Skippers crock, are busy at work putting things in order for tho coming sea on. No less than 17 men arc at work ! makinx roads, cutting water tacts, erecting an eight- h«a) battftry, and opening: out tho mine, | Mr L. 0. R-dl i« on tho jrronnd laying off levels, roads, Ac, and preparing plans preparatory to placing this property upon the London market. I On tho opposite bank of the cieek the owners of I the Crystal mine are busy taking out a trial ennbiug from what is virtually tho continuation of the Leviathan lodo. From the above it will appear that there ia a bright future before thw district, for at a moderate calculation these works will give remunerative employment to about 200 naon. The Lake Wakatip Mail reports that Mr Fred. Kvans, manager of the Achilles Goldflelds, Limited (Phcunu) mine, Bullendalo, viaited the mine last week after an absence of 4J years in London. It is tho intention of this company to bring in to the battery houso water from the Mi hand branch of Skippera creek to work tho b*tt<sry, luuling, and pumping, tho latter two to Iw worked by new electric mushines. An electric hoist and threo plunder electric pumps are already ordered in England, and to atrivo here ht the end ot tho yew. Tho water in tho mine ia bung \ gradually got under. At the Gknrock (Premier) mine, Macetown, an inclined tunnel is being at preterit driven below the low level adit, following- the dip of the golden i shoot The ftwt 80ft are already complete, and an electrical hauling gear, to be driven by a dynamo at the crushing will, in now oa it* way from DuikuHd, awl will be capable of Imitljng three tons at a timo up thn above mentioned iiu.lino of 23Jdeg. at the rate of 40ft a minitfe. The New Zealand Hngi&eering and Electrical Company, Dunedin, are the dc^ignera, and also supply the mach ; Mory. Highly reproductive golden stone ia already in sight, atvl it i hoped that the battery will be in full swing about tho Ist November, with plenty of good payable Htone availablo for constant operations. Tho Tippentry Company, Macotown, luva driven their L.wer tunnel 1700 ft, out of ISDOfb required to strike the reef, wb'ch it ia anticipated will bo reached about the Ist December next, when, if anticipations are realised, a prosperous season will remit. The Leviathan Company, Skippers Creek, havo now 17 men employed constructing water races, forming roada, and erecting an eight-bead battery* also driving levels and *toping. Mr L. O. Beal, C.E., is on the ground laying on? the roads, <fee, aud, it is hinted, with a view also to floating tho. property on the ICaglish market into a joint stock oompany. On the opposite aide of the creek, a trial crushing is being taken out of the Crystal mine.
