The conductors of the Otago Witness have decided to offer pi-izes for tho be3t three Tales specially wrlttan for the Witness Christmas Number of the oarrent ye»r. The amount offsred for competition will be EIGHTEEN GUINEAS, Divided into three prizes, thus :— FIRST riIIZE „. ~ TEN GUINEAS SECOND PRIZE .„ ~ FIVE GUINEAS . THIRD PRIZE ... THREE GUINEAS. The competing Tales will be submitted to a well-known local literary man who has undertaken to act as judge, and the awards will be published as scon after tho close of the competition as possible. Unsuccessful competitors will have their MS. RKruiiNKD to THEM as goon as the awards are axiziouctceil. RULES OF THE COMPETITION. The competition will conclude on THURSDAY, October 31. All Tales to be sent in not later than that date. Competing Tales to contain not less than 10 nor more than 20 columns of the Witness, or, say, from 12,000 to 21,000 words. AU MS. to be legibly written in ink, on one side of the paper only. No restriction whatever is made as to tho selection of the plot, but all else being equal a preference would probably be given to a Tale of New Zealand or Australian life. All MS. to have a norn de plume attached, and to be accompanied with the name and address of the writer in a sealed envelope addreased to the Editor, the envelopes to remain unop-ned until the receipt of the awards from the judge.
