OTAGO AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SOCIESY.

HORSE PARADE. The fourteenth annual parade of horses, under the auspices of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society, was held afc Tahuua Park on Thursday under the management of a committee ccmi&tirg of Messrs Janus Smith, jun., P. Pbttuilo, Jmocs Gow, G. Todd, R. Gawn, W. H. Taggart, D. Eicon, J Duthie, aud R. Chatter*. The weather, albeit somewhat chilly in the afternoon, was fine, and the park, which haß recently undorgouc topdre^sing, has never been iv better condition. Thcve was a fair attendance of persons inlces-t-d in agricultural purhuits, but buyers were particularly successful in concealing ih-iuirelviS, ami very little stock changed hands during the day under the hammer of the auctioneers. Tne total entry of horses was slightly iv exct-as of lasb yenr's total, as the fo'lowmg comparative statement of the entries will show : — 1804. 1805. Clydesdale stallions 32 31 Clydesdale mares 4 1 Carriage, trotting, and roadster stallions 9 18 Thoroughbreds 9 9 Ponies ... 1 1 Totals 55 60 Though there were a larger number of horses paraded than in 189*, truth compels the ad-mi.'-Hicn that several of the animate entered were not of a sufficiently good class to warrant the prominence that was given to them. This remark applies to the Clydesdale class rather than to that embracing carriage and trotting stallions, in which quality was well represented. Among the draught horaes special attention was bestowed upon the recently imported horse Willie, owned by Mr John Trentrail, of Melbourne. Willie, who is * dark dapple bay, rising t-ix years old, is by the imported sire Luckj Wiliie. Ha is a horse of a oapital stamp, with good legs and splendid notion, and he has plenty of size. In the judgment of experta he should materially improve the breed of horses in this colony. The imparted Craigiovar, owned by Mr T. Mcc, of Maheno, and regarded as a horse of the best typ«, was amoDgst the others paraded. His sire is O'd. Times, the dam being Maggie, by Prince of Wales. He was present at the parade 12 months ago, when he attracted a great deal of attention, as also did Wallace, who was again paraded this year, and voted to be one of the beat stallions on the ground. Grandmaster is well known to the cognofcenti, bub having been foaled in 1881 is now getting somewhat old. He is not to ba confused with another Grandmaster entered in this year's parade, the latter being au Island Chief colt rising four years old. Among the young stock three Taieri colta attracted principal attention. Two of these— Count Mattei and Pride of the Glenhave been bred by Mr 11. Charters, of Ury Park, and both are by Glengyle, and were foaled in 1892. Th°y are gooJ sound colts and promife to maintain their owner's reputation. The third of the colts referred to is King of Quality, bred by Mr R. Gawn, of Deer Park. This is a two-year-old by Lion King from Scotch Annie, and is a colt of a good stamp. The other draught entires paraded w«ro the following, nearly all of them having been exhibited at previous parades : — Lord D nrniore, who was imported to Victoria in 1887, when he w<vs six years old ; Young Extinguisher, who has en his sire's side the blood of the mare Mnggie M'Cormick, with the Bloisom strain on the dam's side ; Prime Miuistcr, who claims Lord Salisbury as his sire ; Prince of Windsor, who is by the imported sire Princa Victor, from the Taieri mare Countess ; Vanquisher 111, a bright bay, bred at Hokoaui ; British Emperor, who has a well-known sire in King of the CUns ; Lord Lyon, now risiug seven years old, and a familiar figure at Tahnna Park ; Lord Glasgow (Dempster's), who has been bred at Waikouaiti, in which district he has been a consistent prize-taker ; Biilliant Boy, a well topped horse, owned by Mr John M'KHUr, of Southbridge ; Young Reformer, rising six years old, aud a son, as his name implus, of the, stallion Reformer ; St. Alexander, the bay stallion imported from Great Britain two years ago ; Lord Onalow, who is by the previously mentioned Lord Lyon, and has a good reputation in the Western diotiict ; Prince Albert, a colt rising four years old, bred at Elderslie ; Black Prince, who has in Clansman and Princess Maude a sire aud dam rtsptctively that havo been successful bhuw horses, ?.ud is himself a horse of a good staisp ; Young Marquis, a five-year -old sou of the Marquis of Lome ; Conqueror, who come 9 from Winton, and is the five-year-old progeny of Extinguisher; Moatrose another of Clansman's Btock and a r'sing five-year-old; Lord Glasgow (Prjde's), the second of the Dame at the parade and a five-year-old, claiming Lord Salisbury as his sire; Lord Hopctoun, rising four years old, by Hard Times ; Solicitor, a tin ee-y ear-old cjlt, brtd by Mrs Miller, of the Taieri ; Prince Consort, by Lord Salisbury, who haß a good record ; Young Lord Lyou, who3e name betrays his parentage ; and Bar None, a bay colt, risiDg threo years old, with a fashionable pedigree. The class of carriage, trotting, and roadster stallion 3, as previously indicated, was an excdlent one. The imported Cock of the Walk II and Wieklow neul »o c<.rtificvre in Otago, where their merits are well recognised, but another Cock of the Walk— a poverty of ideas in regard to nomenclature being obrervable among owners of stallions as much as among owners of racing stock,— brought from Timaru by Mr F.Simmons, attracted a lot of favourable attention. He is a four-year-old, sired by the imported Oldenburgh stallion Orpheus, and is a fine specimen of hi? class — well framed and quiet. A full brother, named Charger, though a nice horse, does not present such quality. Texas, a

dappled grey, claiming a« his sire the wellknown hone Berlin, and with a good record as a competitor in tho ohow ring, also hails from Canterbury. Berlin Abdallah, Blacksmith, Cowboy, and Julian 11, all well known to the trotting fraternity in Otngo, were paraded amongst the rest ; and Syntax, a son of Pinole Patchen, was also included among the trotting stallions. A two-year-old carriage stillion, entered by Mr L. D. Robertson, (f Sandflj Bay, though not in show condition, a'/ta< ted the admiration of those whose attention was directed to him. Ho is a sou of Wicklow, to whom he bears a marked resemblance, and is good tempered and possesses splendid bone. Entered nob iv tho thoroughbred class bub in the carriage stallion class was Rubezahl, and the son of Seesaw—Fairyland was in first-c1,i58 onditjon, notwithstanding whioh ho did nob elicit a bid when offered for pale. TVaroa, the well-known stallion, who has been in North Otago for several seasons, was looking well if a trifle rough in condition, but he too failed to find a pnrcha»«r. Tho others entered in this branch of the show were— Lord Wolseley, Highland Laddie, Uold Dust, Mount Royal, a Barlio coU, and a Lord John colt. Digby Grand is generally to be found among tho thoroughbreds, and this year's list again included him, looking none the worse for his increase I ago. Dunville, also, wa« again paraded, but a new figure was the well-kuown old racer Ruby, now doing duty in the Maniototo district. Gipsy Prince, Waylind, and Mariner are all well-known to racing men, aud a three-year-old colt by Gipsy Prince was also parided. The pony stallion Matchem again cons' ituted a claßfl iv himself. The only Clydesdale mare paraded was the recent importation Rose, brought over from Victoria by Mr J. Tretttail. She is rather on the small side, but is a nice maro, obowing good quality. She has splendid legs, and her neck and head are well set on. If any fault is to be found with her it is that she it just a little fiat in the ribs. She was purchased, after severe competition, by Mr R. Charters, who was generally complimented on having made a valuable addition to his stock. The following is the list of the entries : — CLYDESDALKS. Messrs Whight, Sii:riiKN«ON, and Co. report a*< follow-. :— We \w\<\ our thirty-fourth annual Bale atTahuna Park under the auspices of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society. There wa.s a spleadid muster of horse, particularly of Clydesdaleß, and it was generally conceded that in thiH famous breed of draught horses— that is, taking the chws all through— there was a very decided improvement in the quality of the exhibits in oomparison with tho£e of recent years. Of the lighter breeds there was also a good turn out. This annual exhibition of . stud hoises is intended to bring together breeders from all parts of thi3 island, as well as from tho North Island and from the sister colonies, and when times wore more prosperous it used to doso. It is with much regret we have to chronicle today's proceedings as the most unsatisfactory in all our long experience in this branch of our business, and the feeling of disappointment on the part_ of our enterprising breeders and of the society which I gets up this annual fixture must have been very acute, for out of the 60 horsea which passed under the auctioneer' hammer only four found purchasers, and these at price 3 which

can only be charaotorisod as ruinously low. The attend irce of the public was not good, and tho proportion of Imyura present was very small. The few who were prepared to do business ( were for thi moat ouly open for an " exchang'-," and the consoquence was that with the exception already reierred to most of the trade done was the result of private treaty* Of the tiO horses offered we submitted 50-say, 29 Clydesdales and 21 of other classes.
