Dear Pasquin,— And yet another dull week ; but the season of festivities is drawing nigh, when wo shall have Mr Bland Holt coming to us from the south and the Bnsy B.s descending upon as from tho north, whilst in the immediate present Mr J. St. Clair promises us a fine fill-up with his combination ; and as an appotiser to the coming bill of fare, our amateurs and Mr and Mrs Greenaway are to give us a performance of Betsy at the Opera House next Wednesday, for the benefit of the two artists just named, on whose behalf a large committee is very energetic, and his Excellency the Governor and party have promised thenattend xn cc. Air Frank Wise, of Wellington, hfta teen engaged as perruqucv iv connection with the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society 8 production oi " The Mikado " next week. Mr Wise is a great favourite with our amateur operatics. Mrs Harry Marshal), Ute of Wellington, is one of the new lessees of Her Majesty s Theatre. Sydney, and will be in the cast of The Scout, which is to be the opening piece under the new regime. The Caledonian Society's annual concert was a great success. There was the usual large and varied programme, and it will interest readers down your way to note that the honours of tho evenin* fell to an Oamaru visitor, Mrs Reid, who has a iweet soprano voice of good rang*, and a
charmiug manner of rendering the querint Scotch song-i. Appearing in the programme for two solids, she was compelled to sing five before the audience would bo satisfied. Tbese were "My heather hills," "Bonnio Prince Charlie," "Morajfs fairy gleD," " AHielandnian's toast," and "Castles in the air." The Australian Merrymakers are at it again in the Cri. with old gags and new gaggers. This is the season of concerts and organ recitals. Last evening Mr Robert Parker gave an interesting recital from Handel, and to-night Mr T. Tallts Trunnell fa giving an evening with German and Italian composers, with Madnme Eveleeu Carlton as eololst. In the matter of coming musical events, all local, we are to have ?ood thing« in (I) a benefit concert to Mr Macduff Boyd, (2) au invitation concert by Madame Cope (ucc Sheath), a. Dunedinite, and (3) the concert to Mr J. W. Hill. The Faust Family Combination, with Martyn Hagan, Lucy Fraser, and others, which Mr J. St. Clair is bringing on a tour of Now Zealand, is to arrive in Wellington from Sydney on the 10th prox. and open its season here. Mr St. Clftir himself is due here to night in the Wakatipu, and tho company follow by the next boat. There is a strange s*ri6s of in the drowning of J. Wykeain the harbour lmt Suiutay. He makes the second employee of our Opera Home who has been thus lo^t, the other (who was drowned with Mr Oaborne) being the doorkeeper, whilst Mr Wykes was a mechanist. Again, it was the same boa*, the Pa-time, and yet again the day in lolh cases was Sunday. The funeral was largely attended. A widow and two children mourn the loss.
