AUCKLAND TOPICS

By Taihoa. Sepl ember 30. The entries received for the Auckland Racing Club's Second Spiing and Summer meetings show a fulling off compared with the rohirns for lafit year, when the nominations totalled 161. The total recvived la*t Friday waa U7. In tko Auckland ( 'up there are eight less than in IBM, aud t>iere i.s a simi'ar decrtass in tha R.C. Handicap, while there are two less in the Steeples. The total for the throe events in connection with tba S-.'Cond Spring meeting is six less than was the ca'-e Ust year. Major Georgu's Cup candidate Pegasus is doing well, bub Wdsuher of lato h*B been all aj^inst decent woik being accomplished at Elleratio One of our be.^t lightweight horsemen, _ Fred Da vi^, h*B be-'n engaged to ride this hors<; in tbe Cup. l>avit", -who ro*fo Lottie in last yeir's roce, is attached to Jame* Ktan's stable, but as that veteran tiainer has nothing engaged in the Cup, end at Lottie willjiot be rjcod until Christmas, he has apraed to th'TeugAsjemeut. Moreover. Kean hag a hi» iii»A lKvt I'i'g-Lsus ran win the Cup of the year. If Ihe colt lo^e', it wi 1 not be the fault of the hor^em in. • The Workman was sold to Mr F. Sparks, of Wanganui, last vreek for £Cog 3, and left for his new homa to-day. Two other important sUllion sales have been effected since my last wire, the Musket horse Brigaditr having b^en purobasel from Mes*r«i Puder Brotheis by Mr It Block, of Aratapu, whilo Tulbch (by Sword D^ncc— Welcome Kati^) has been bought by a llawera breeder whose name hti' not transpiied. Tho (• lliwing foaling have been announced :— Oui'la (by Yatttindon— Gulnaiv), crlt to Oaitor ; Vivandi-re (by Mu.-ket— G?orgie), filly to Cui-n\-siei-; I.aD.wpbine (by The D*\ii»hin— BiMbolia), colt U> St Leger. George Wright returns from Sydmy next Sunday, and will, I understand, only bring back St. Hippo and Doris. Of the seveial horses he took acrots, Koyal Koae has been sold, so we need not expect tho son of King Cole and Rosalind to compete in the New Zealand Cup. Wright's trip haa been a costly one. No doubt Royal Rose's Sydnoy Handicap run would cause a good offer for the horse, which Wright could not afford to pass by. (Xsculator's owuer, Mr D M'l.eod, returned today, but I understand that the horse did not come back with him, having been s*nt on to Melbourne to compete at the Flemington carnival. Impulse still continues to thrive in his preparation, which is now conducted at Kllcrslie, tho owner recognising that it is aa well to exercise the hoi^e where he will get accustomed to company. This borue will strip well for the Cup, wbirh event, I repeat, he will give a very decided shaking to. The Takapuna J.C. will hold three meetings this season, the dates of which have been fixed as follows: Spring, DtcemberT; Summer, January 29 and February 1 ; Winter, May 24. In the past this club has only conducted two meetings during the year. Pegasus and Major George's two-year-old colt Admiral Hawke (by Nelson— Vendetta) leave for Christchurch in a fortnight's time to fulfil their C.J.O. ergagements. The Castor— Hilda two-year-old Antarcs, stable companion of St. Paul and the Maxim— Burlesque colt Popgun, left for Napier on Saturday to attend the Hawke's Bay Spring meeting. A private cablegram received by Messrs Nathans states that St. Hippo knocked himself during a gallop after the A. J.C. meeting, but that no serious results were apprehended by the trainer.
