TASMANIAN RETALIATION.

The Government have received a cablegram from the Tasmanion Government, as mentioned in the prefcs nusaageb from Australia yesterday, protesting against the proposed duti< s on f ruife. A reply has b~tn sent to the effect that the duties are boo being imposed for any unfriendly purposes, but simply to afford protecticn and provide revenue. The Government do not intend to abandon the duties bnt will leave them to the decision of the House. The Government look upon the protest ns rather extraordinary, inasmuch as, according the Colonial Treasurer, even as things now stand, Ta- mania imposes heavy protective duties on the principal export 3of New Zealand to that country.
