AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By Taihoa

Auckland, September 23. The second day of tho Auckland Racing Club'f First Spring meeting was fearfully tieated in tha way of weather, the rain falling in a perfect deluge throughout the afternoon. The course was more" like a quagmire than anything else, but in spite of this drawback thoro were first-rate raciug and a very satisfactory attendance, and the machines operated on £3509 during the day, which amount shows an increase of £?.O1 as compared with the return for last year. Several spills occurred in the event for hunters. One of the Hunt Club contestants— Crusader, Miss M'Langhlin's hunter— Ml and broke his neck, while near the post and rails on the hill an accident occurred where Union Jack was killed on, the Saturday previous. As was the case with Mr Kui«eH'd horse, CrtiFader pitched on bis head and bioke his neck. Fortunately Mr M'Laughlin, who was riding, escaped injury. In the M'inb-rb' Huidlo Race Caesar broke down badly in the shoulder, and could hardly litiip off the course. The loading event in the open contests was tha A>cct Handicap, of SOsovs, one milf, which would have given rise to a good contest had Waiuku remained in. His sciatching meant a loss of t ttalisator money. Although the field contained many good racers, the profit to be gained off the machine was not sufficient to en« Mire a 1< gitimate fight. Pegasus was mads favourite, Ywt with 9.1 over a niila hiß chance waa of the " Buckley V variety. The elushy nature of the track was it point in his favour, for hard goiug does not suit him ; but Major Oeoiße's horse cannot get going in oue mile. St. Clements started, but his backing was not up to a fight-for-a-finish standard. His form was not visible to the naked eje;but I fanoy it will be discernible when he goes down to the Hutt meeting. Lady Maron ran home the winner, with Markiuch and Grenadier in the pluces. After them rame Popgun and Pegasus, then tha out for-au -airing Brigade. In the five furlongd .Shorts 14 hoises started, Lady Marion being favourite, with Fabulist (a Fabu'oun— Jutiisthona colt) r>ext in favour. Linstock had the raoa in band at the distance, but Davis on Fabulist beat him by jockey*hip The stable lad who wa3 entrusted with the mount on Linstock threw the rare away by drawing hiß whip instead of sitting still and allowing the horse to win, the result being that Fa<-ulifi> beat him by a neck. La'ly Marion was a good third. Fabulibt had £5 invested on him in the mile race and .£55 in the Shorts, which goes a long way towards explaining his run in the former race. Bit o1o 1 Faihion easily defeated the ponies in tlio miniature race, and Kingswood beat St. Patrick on the poat in the Maiden Hurdle?, John Rae, for once iv a way, departed from his unual tactics of lying out of his fifcld. He kept right alongside tlitin with Kingiwood, and after jumping the huidlc in the btraight with St Patrick, be*t him homo for a place by a tare length. Dorothy illlo'l the rennining position. The Hunt Club Cup was won by an ancient hunter belonging to Mr Petcival, the secretary of the A.lt.C, named Jim ; and a very popular win it was. The old hotse kept a sound pace right through, and, never making a faulty jump, wore the field down in the last half-mile. Jimmy, belonging to Mr A. Gorrio (at one lime manager oi the Lawrence branch of tho Bank of Now Zoaland), finishing in second place, and Dandy Dick third. ! Sftunterer's win in the Bracelet was an e«y I affuir, as waa also its Tally-ho Steeple victory and Kalo'a in the Mambero' Hurdles. Sixty-three hoffes remain in the A.R.C. Royal Stakes of 1895-96, Bob Ray and Mr Stead's trio (Mai>nlicber, Bloodshot, and Musketry) being among them. The Messra Nelson have sold the stallion l'abulous, half- brother to St. Leger, to Sttwart Brothers, of Helensville. The following foalings have been recorded :— Major George's Swiftsure (by Nelson — Tembra), colt to The Workman ; "W. Walter's Ilipporina (by Hippocampus — Yatterina), filly to Blairgowrie ; Messrs Natlnn's La Dauphine (by The Dauphin— Bras-olis), colt to St. Leger; Major George's The Maid (by King of the Ring—Maid-of-all-work), bay filly to Nelson ; Mr S. Waltera's Musketrina (by Musket — Hipporina), filly to Blairgowrie ; K. Burko's Hune (by Cap-a-Pie— Raupo), colt to Cvi t assier. The Glenora Park .Stud sustained a heavy loss on Saturday, its leading biro, Blairgowrie, drop, ping dead in his paddock while doing an exercise gallop. An examination of the horse points to death having been caused by heart disease. Thu mishap is a cruel blow to Mr Walters, who baa had fearfully bad luck lately. At one time big famous rose-and-pink stripes bore down all oppo« sitiou, but during recent seasons the jacket haa been dogged with persistent ill-fortune. Blairgowrie, who was got by the Newminster horse Vespasian from Atholiae, by Blair Athol, waa imported in 1893 from New South Wales by Mr Walters, and judging from the fctock got by him he would have proved a very payable purchase had he been spared. One rising yearliDg by him out of Satanella (dam of St. Clements and St Paul) is already a promising youngster. The annu»l meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club, held thi3 afteruoou, showed that the net profit for the year, after providing six starting machines and erecting a telegraph house and appliances at the course, amounted to £528 Us 2d. Both meetings held by the club had proved very successful. The receipts for the year were £3f'Bß 19? 7d, and the expenditure £W0 7s sd. Tha balance sheet showed an excets of assets over liabilities of £iOB4 IPs 8d ; the cash in bank and, in hand amounted to £387 19s 31. Cotumitteeniea were elected as follows :— Messrs 11. H. Duder. Jf,

WVIs, W. Adams, J. J. Ralph, A. Liston, G. Lankran, W. Averttf, J Mays, G W. Allipon. Aa you are awara, there have been persistent rumours afloat « unsounduess on the part of Muhaki. The horse was sound a week ago ; tonight, however, there is app«rontly a Well-based report that ho has developed a leg, acd has not bceu out of the stable duiiug the last Bix days. T cannot vouch for the truth of tho report. All I know at present is that Taylor, who Ins been ■engaged to rido Mahnki in the Cup, leaves Aucklaod on Thursday to ride tho horse in his work. North Atlantic is another Cup candidate whose pro«p«cts are wrapped in a cloud ol doubt. Ho has not been working fora long time past, and I think I am rißbt in saying that he will not be nominated for the Hawke'a Bay or Napier Park meetings. Mr G. P. Donnelly has scratched Huatai for thoi Hawke's Bay Flying on the ground that the 8.2 awarded is altogether out of proportion to the coU's performances. There has been a little Cup betUng since my last wire, Outpost haviug heen supported at £09 to 13, While 200 of Waiuku has been taken at 100 to 8. In spite of the rumour re Mahahi, be and , Pegasus are favourites at 10's, with Skirmisher, * Impulse, Iribh Twist, and Waiuku next at B'b ; Outpost, Gipsy Grand, and Skirmisher at G'a : and St. Hippo and Royal Rose at s'*. The latter horre ihould harden befote long, for I fancy his mission Is the Now Zealand Cap.
