LAKE COUNTY.

SKPTEMBBR. 7 — The first half of the weet proved very bad in icipect to the weather. Ham and storm were the order of the day, while mu<*h fla<h lightning prevailed during the night*. Shortly after Tuesday midnight and early Wednesday morning a tmart thunderstorm brought things to a he-ad, aud since then the weather has been fine for gpring weather, if spring it can be called when snow is still lying in gardens in every shady corner and fruit trees have not begun to open their bnds. However, we may now s*y that we are over the danger from flo <\\ as recent showers have swept moat of the low-lying snow ofT the mountains, and all that remains— goodly quantity though it be— is pretty well frozen into ice that requires time to thaw. But it is likely that during the whole of the coining summer our rivers will be pretty well supplied with water. Rain alone very r*rely causes floods in the rivers of our district, because of the greit amount of fall in their course, the water running off as fast as it falls, whatever effect the increasing volume may have upon the Molyneux. Obituary.— On the 27th of last month there died at Queenstown Mra Frazer, the relict of the late Mr John Frazer, who both belonged to the pioneers of this district. Mrs Frazer, who had reached the sixty-sixth year of her age, was highly thought of by all who kuew her,, and though of a retiring idspasition, making her homa her world, she was never behindhand in kindly acts or help to those in trouble. Three sons and a daughter mourn her death. The large attendance at the funeral showed at ouce the rosp°ct the deceased waa held in, and the sympathy felt for the surviving relatives. Mr Mchaffey read the fnneral service in an impressive manner at the grave.— On Runday night last the wife of Mr Henry M'Kibbin died at the early age of 32 years, after having given birth a few day 3 previously to a stillborn child. The deceased bad.

been ailing for a few mouths, and though of a strong constitution ahe never quite recovered her health Great sympathy is felt for Mr M'Kiblnn, I who is much respected by all who knoiv him. At ! the funeral on Tuesdiy last a large number of sympathiiers followed the remains to their last renting pUce, where the Roy Mr Cotor (Anglican pastor) conducted the buiial service of his church in a very touching manner. Co operation.— The co-operators who took contracts under this new system of road-making upon th-i Arrowtown-MjkCttown dray road extension have fallen upon evil time*. Home of them made oi)ly3& per day, while the majority thiew up their contracts after having lost heavily by them, and only one party made anything like small wages. No doubt this is partly owing to the l-a I weather that prevailed, and partly to other causes. The ca-e has bten brought under the notice of tbe Government, and sw it is probable that m'-ii'tj will be heard of it it will suffice for the time being to say that not all co-operator.: fall into ro*y billets. H si' it At Bau..— The Frankton Hospital bill, which took pl>ice last night, was one of the moat successful and best attended affairs of the kind that has ever tnken place in the district. The G^rrieon H^ll at Qaeenstown w*s crowded with dancers, whose toilets g.ive a very gay appearance to the la'ee hall. Dancing was k^pt up till the &111 ill hours.
