PRESERVATION INLET.
Mining nnt'ei.i iv this district havo been con* sidciubiy affected by tho continuance of tho exceptionally severe weather which characterised tho whole winter. On Cojil Island, Bamsny's party, on the bench at Otago'a Retreat, and Payno and Wilson, in No. 2 Cluck, vie doiu-j as well ai usual. Habcificld'a puty arc doing jjrepaisvtory woik.with a good proipect of getting on gold shortly. One party has been woiking at the mouth of No 2, but havo done no good and are loaviug it. The other parties in No. 2 Creek and several others on Moonlight creek are doing nothing much. On the mainland tha M'Kiuua brothers at Gulches are doing fairly ; Woods and party at the Neck arc busy bringing in water ; tho other parties in this part of the district are doing poorly. The .same may be said of the Wilson River alluvial miners genonilly, though Gobbitt's claim ia, I hear, proving mere satisfactory, and some nice lough gold has been got at an abandoned terrace chum higher up the river. In reeling matters the Golden Site, the pioneer reef cliim of the district, has not bii«jn crushiDS for some little tutje, owing to the fact that tho drive nli-ng the line of reaf ha 3 been passing through mullfck instead of solid reef. A changa is being niide in the m.vnagem<-nt of the micie, as Jlr Wilson, who has been in charge for souio time, is leaving to take an appointment in another district. He will bo missed by many who havo profited by the advice and sssistanco which ho has freely bestowe lon all who sought it. His uuftiil* ing courtesy and cousHeration for the miners have won him the respect and esteem of allclas»93 of our little lomnuinity. The Break of Day havo sunk their shaft to » depth of f-Gft and put a erues-cut into the reef. Th-y have a body of .stone, but so far havo pot got anything very iicb. Most of the o'her licensed holdings along this line of roef have been, or are abouS to b", abandoned, th<A\'?h the Shaddcrtoa has been applied for agAin lately. On Long Beach tho Morning Star Company have got their battery into working order, and have a cake, representing a fortnight's crußhißjr, rcidy to send out. The battery is doiug its work splendidly, and as a large qu-utily of g'dl stone hw i.een i pened up by (he <-riif.«, gtcr«s hoiKH are ent- rtain< d of the pro-pecta of this properly. OnCraifith Inland Messrs Williams and Trent have started a new drive, but havenot been able to nuko much headway owing to tho almost unceasing torrents of rain. Longuefc and party in Sealers Creek have been trenchiiu v. ith a view to cutting their rcuf further along. Notliiug much can be done with this churn, Imwi-vi r, pending "«urv< y. At (!atll: Co\e the drive is into tho Sfc. Gcorgo claim (.starling fi'im tho Lizard), but work has bejn much hindered by weather and other cauaea. —Southland Tiruei correspondent.
