THE BETTERMENT BILL.

A PROTEST FROM CENTRAL OTAGO. (Fhom Our Own Correspondent.) Clyde, September 6. A representative meeting of settlers w^s held at Ophic on Wednesday to consider tbe Betterment Bill. Mr James Macuthur, praaidtnt of the Central ObxgJ Agrieu'turil Society, was chairman. Mr Gilkisjn moved— "That this meeting of farmers coudemns tho Betterment Bill as unjust and arbitrary, and calls upon the House of Failiament to refuse ti pass ii as at present brought down." Mr Lea^k seconded the motion, which was carried uuauimously. Great indignation i» expressed, and there is strong feeling in the district as the bill is unfair to settlers, and practically stops the Obgo Central railway at Eweburn. Copies of the resolution are to be forwarded by telegraph to the Hon. Messrs Cadman, John M'Kenzie, and Larnach, Mr Fraser, and Sir R. Stout.

The BankiDg Bill has received the Governor's assent. It is generally said that married men are in a mjoiity oa the co-op' r.itive works, but five g«DS& working on the Alfivdcon-Wtbsr and bye road}, comprising 22 men, include 18 who are unmarried. Chambirlain's Cough Remedy gives the best satisfaction of any cough medicine I handle, and as a seller leads all other preparations io th ; 3 m rket. T recommend it because it is the brst mt'l'cm -•> I 4 ser handled for coughs, cold*, and croup.— A. W. Baxdbidgb, Millersville, IU. ifcr e»ie by all leading ohemtsts.
