Clever Pat.
The following incideut occurred some years ago at a small viHago near Ohcetarfleld, when twist tobftsco was 3^d per onnca. An Irishman named Pat entered a small grocer's shop, and tho following dialogue took place : P»t : " Sure now, and what is yer tobacco an ounoo ? " Wonun: "3£d." Pat : " Now what would that bo for half tn ounce ? " Woman.: •• 2d." Pat (hesitating) : •' Weigh mo half an ource." The woman did so and laid it on the counter, when a bright idea occurred to Pat. Soya he: " Weigh me another half-ouace." The woman did as requested, thinking ho was going to take tho ounce and thus save the half-psuuy. Bat when she pat the two half ounces together Pat said t " The first wan was 2d ( this wa« lAd. Sure now, I think I'll take the last one?' And, laying down l£d, he walked out of tho shop, leaving the woman too flabbergasted for utterance.
