Progressive euohre wbb played with great spirit in the dining room, where about half a dozen tables were arranged for that purpose, the remainder of the guests meanwhile playing dominoes and p'qu&t in the drawing room. Miss Edith Batchelor succeeded in winning the most games at eucbr*, and const quently vron the prizi — a Japanese man; while Mr J. Wrtgut was the lucky ma", ana became the recipieut of a novel entitled "Through Highway» and Hedges.^' After thi*. an adjournment was made to the school room, where a dainty little supper was served. The evening was brought to a close with some music. Miss Gwen. Roberts played in her usual able style; Misa A. Greenwood sang 11 Old fenyman " very sweetly, and Miss E. Brnothcrfd iv yollow daffodils and red japonica ; then tho table was lit by candles in tall stands, each of which had an elegant little shade of red and yollow crinkled paper, and from one candlestick to another extended long streamers of red and yellow tebe ribbon, and all about the table wora placed the red and yellow flowers. The •dibles comprised all manner of good things — fowls, hams, tongues, aspics, mayonnaises, jellies, creams, shapes, meringues, froit Balads, cakes and sandwiches, and some origlnalminded young lady had designed her jellies red and yellow, so that they also should harmonise with the decorations. The stage was comfortably furaiahed as a drawing room, and made a pleasant retreat for the matron?, where they could see well and away from all draughts, and in the front were placed lovely large plants — palms, flaxes, &2. — which added considerably to the beauty of the tceno from the opposite end. Messrs Yates Brothers (piano and violin) supplied the music, and played popnlar aira in «xcellent time, whioh always goes a long way towards maintaining the spirit and excitement of a dance. The lancers especially were capital, this, I think, being Messrs Yates's chef d'asuvre. The extra dances during supper time were well rendered by Mi3B Gertrude Rattray, Miss Elhel Maca6sey, Miss Mabel Kempthorne, and Miss Minnie Branson. The Otago Lawn Tennis Club held their annual ball last Friday evening, and it proved a great success, all the arrangements being perfect, except that the ball became rather too hot during part of the evening. There was an exceptionally large committee, all members of the Otago courts, and there seemed not to be any too many, as all found there was plenty of work to be done, both beforehand and dnring the evening. The dance was held in the Choral Hall, and the floor was in exceptionally good condition, there having been one or two dances in the same ball during the week. The decorations, which consisted chiofly of flags against the walls and also small pendants fastened on ropes, and stretching from corner to corner, only meeting in the centre, were most tasteful. There wore also large leaves of tree ferns' placed below the flags along with bnnches of yellow wattle, the perfume of which is a trifle strong for indoors. Supper was served in the room adjoining the hall, and it was certainly mo&J; recherche and inviting; decidedly great credit is due to those ladles who looked after this put of the ettertalnment. The table was most tastefully decorated with red and yellow, which are the oolours of the club. A large vase stood iv the centre of the table literally
