PUBLICATIONS RECEIVED.

The Pall Mall Magazine for August is really a Eumptuous number. The opening article, " When Leaves are Greta," is by "A Son of the Marshes," whose style to cloßoly resembles that of Jtfferics, aud thj illustration-* iv colours are by the exqu'stte bird painter, Giicomtl'i. Tfhen follows en ar'iclo on " The Palaca of Fontaine* blcau," enriched with many extremely bcauti« ful piclu«s, notably those of •• Charlemagne's Oak" aud "St. Louis's Oak." . "Fu.'lies of Fashion " makes one lonient even to ratiouals in contrast with past indecencies and absurdities. The new Berial story is nob yet bpgun, bat there is some good fiction of the purely sensational type, and is to counterbalance the matter, a, sweat and daintily-pictured idyll by Crockttt, another chapter on " Evolution in Early Italian Art," and an article on the "Habits and Tastes of Fish," wherein there is as much illustration as lelterpre33. The August number cf the Tciad is as bright and interesting as usual. In addition to the usual topics of interest in music and painting, there is a brief review of " The Time Machine," that ghastly story by Wells, which has been running through the "New Review," and a very cunning poem, " Benno on his Bike," taken from the Argus. Moreover, and this will be the cream of the matter to scm<j people, the results of the last £10 comps'ifciou aro given and the conditions of a new competition. Part V of " Bt-autiful Britain " has been sent to us by Messrs Prictor and Oinnby. It is equal ia excellence with the previous numbers and is also quite as interesting. The Ruins at Frogmore, Raglan Castle, Knebwortb, with Farnham, Windsor, Berkeley, and Loch* leven Castles, and the famous Holland House may be mentioned as among the leading pictures. There are two or three interior views which will also attract attention. A glance at any of the numbers will show at once why Urn parts have beea in aoeh. demand.
