Heavy rain fdl aboat 6 30 last evening and continued for some time. The downpour dii no harm in tho city and suburbs, but as it extended to Central Otago it is feared that the Taieri river may do damage on the plftiu, aa it will be seen by the following belt grams kiudly placed at our disposal by the te egr&ph departmeut that it is rising rapidly :—: — 7.45 pm. NtseHy reports : " Raining heavily here since 5 p.m. The postmaster, P&tearot, informs me that it is the same there, and th»t the Taieri river is riling rupidly, everyt-hing pointing to a big flood. The finow has quite dißnppeu-ed from the low land «, and the high lands are now showing up." 11.30 p.m. Naseby reports : " Been snowing last two hours aud still suowing heavily."

Messrs Howden and Moncrieff received the following wire from Alexandra yesterday :—: — " The Manuherikia and the Manorburn high, still unferdab'e ; both falling. Fences all right ; only damage from several feet fct 11 water, expeoted to drain off rapidly."
