Chiustchubch, July 9. At a meeting of the coiunaifckee of the winter work fund, the mayor reported that up to the present subscriptions to the amount of £839 had bam received, of whioh £750 had been paid to the Charitable Aid Board to secure the Government subsidy. It wis reported that during last week the number of men employed by the various local bodies waB — Christchurch 133, Sydfcnham 56, St. Albans 26, Heathoote 22, Woolnton 15, Avon 67, makirg a total of 319 without including these employed in Linwood, whence there *as no return. The mayor said that he was satisfied that there were still from 150 to 200 men requiring work, and his idea was that the alternative system should be adopted, and men employed either for three days about or week about. If that were done wages could be raised from 4s to 5s per day. He was sorry to say that at the rate they were expending the money they would soon be at an end of their resources.
