FATAL MINING ACCIDENT.

(Fbom Oojr Own OomtESPONDENT.) Abbot/town, July 8. Mr James Cowan, proprietor of a coal mine at Gibbston, was killed on Saturday by the collapge of the ground he was walking on intu some old workings bolow. Mr Cow»n had been at work at his coalpit, and was going for his dinner, which his little girl had jasfc brought him, when the ground under bis feet suddenly gave way, engulfing, him. The men working with him at once went to bis a'sistance, but a second subsidence of the ground into » still lower old working completely buried the unfortunate man, It was not till 5 o'clock in the evening that his bedy was removed, life being then quite extinct.. The deceased leaves a widow and six young children, for whom' tht greatest sympathy is felt.
