ENTERTAINMENTS.
A concert was given in the Saddle Hill Schoolhouse on Friday eveniog. Mr Murdoch, chairman of the i-chool committee, occupied the chair. No doubt the unfavourable weather which prevailod and the bad atata of the roads had the effect of militating against the attendance, which, however, might be considered Batiefactory. The programme submitted waa a mcfcfc enjoyable one, and the audience were not slow to appreciate the effort 3of the performer.: during, the evenin?. Mim Hood played two violin solos with a taste and skill which elicited for hor loud manifedtations of approval ; Mr Nelson gave a couple of humorous Scotch leadings; Mr Lurner gave a recitation ; Misses Finnic and We>t sang a duet ; and the tsoloibts wore Misse6 West and N. WeHt, and Messrs J. L Miller and Strong. Mr J. G E^ston played a pianoforte solo and accompanied the Bingers during the evening. I heconcert was followed by a dance which, as usual, passed off very successfully. On the evening of Friday last a veTy successful concert was given in the North-East Harbeur School under the ausp'ces of the Sabbath School teachers, the Rev. A. Greig presiding, fhe perforrnerb were all local, and they did their several parts remarkably well. During au interval a. seivioe of fruit, kindly supplied by friend*, was dealt out to all present, and at the close a handsomely bound pocket Bible or New iejtaaient was presented to each child attending the Sabbath School. Some time ago prizes were promised to all who should answer so many questions of the Shorter Catechism without, a mistake. Three-Agnes M'Kellar, Charles Pine, and Philip Edwards— fulfilled the conditions to the letter, and nearly all the scholars did so well that it was resolved to give something to eacD. Under Mr George II hues; as superintendent, assisted by Mrs Holmes, Mr Challis, and Miss M Raynbird the North-East Harbour Sunday School was never in a more prosperous condition, there being scarcely a chiM in the district who is not in attendance. . , An entertainment was held at the Mechanics Institute, Hamplen, on Fiiday evening, m aid of the funds of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church. There was a large attendance, among those present being the Rev. .Bather O'Diincll. The hall was tastefully decorated under the supervision of Mra Culling. Mrs T. Lynch (of Oamavu) and Miss K. Blaney (of Dunedin) each sang a couple of songs in excellent style, and wero encored. Messrs Flint and Brundell gave a duet on the mandoline and guitar in each pait of the programme, and, with Mr Yatcs, gave selections on the pianoforte, violin, and naßfolet ; Misses Booth and Joyce (Hamnclen) gave a pianoforte duet, and Mrs Smale a pianof 01 te solo. All of these items were rendered in a pleasing manner, and were heartily applauded. Messis I>. Isaacs and J. Swan kept the audience in roars of laughter while on the stage. The accompaniments wera shared by Mrs Smale and Mr Yates, and Mr Tub» man was stage manager. An enjoyable entertainment was followed by a dance.
