It is reported that tho indemnity to be paid by China will be increased to (?by) 10 millions sterling as a solatium to Japan for giving up territory on the mainland. The French press are satisfied with tha Japanese settlement. The Times recagniaeo the reality of Russian success in opposition to the original terms of peace between China and Japan. It considers it wa3 a good stroke of buaineaa to prevent an aggreealve Power-irom seizing Chinese territory. The result is a complete triumph for the Czar's diplomacy. May 10. The Great Powers will not reduca their squadrons in I he Chinese waters uutil the final seitlcnicnt of tho terms of peace. Lo.ndon, May 11. The Times Paris corespondent states that the Powers are discussing tho Chinese indemnity, which it is believed will be fixed at 110 million pounds, and will not be surpriued if the total loan to repair war damages and restore tho financed reaches 180 million pounds. Reports from Tokio state that Admiral Kabana has been appointed Viceroy, and has sailed for Formosa, with a view to obtain a transfer and take possession. Paris, M*y 8. Franco suggests that Japan should limit the number of warships in Formoßan waters and refrain- from establishing large garrisocd in the Pescadores. May 12. M. Hanotaux, Minister for Foreign Affairs, invites the leading French financiers to consider the impending Chinese loan of L 180.000.000. May 13. The Chinese loan will probably be issued in equal shares in Germany, England, France, and Russia. Fieri oh financiers are in favour of a first issue of L 50,000,000 and balance at intervals to prevent swamping the market. St. Petersburg, May 8. The Russian Government are satk-fisd with the concessions made by Japan and regards the incident as closed, and have stopped the preparations for war. May 10. It is pnblishod that Japan only yielded to Russia's protest on the actual issue of orders by the latter for the mobilisation of 100,000 troops. It is reported that France is demanding the cession of the Pescadores by Japan. May 9. Ratifications of the treaty will be exobanged at Ohefoo. Cholera is raging among the Japanese at Palie Wan. It is reported that owing to a hitch during tho negotiations with Japan the Russian warships at Chefoo wero got ready for action, but the difficulty was subsequently settled. May 10. It is believed Japan will withdraw her contingent gradually as the indemnity in paid. Mny 13. It 5s reported here thai Russia claims Port LazareS, with a radius of 200 miles of territory. China is willing to admit the claim, but Japan proposes to limit the territory to 10 miles. Tokio, May 14. A Note issued by the Japanese Government explains that the Liautong Peninsula was given lip owiug to the opposition of the Power?, and through fear of persistence in the demand interfering with the achievement of peaca.
