Oockerell has designed -what he terms a BUbmarine cradle dredge, for use in places where it is not possible to employ a steam dredgd. The idea is that the dredge will be worked under an i aerial tram suspended across the river directly or diagonally, according as circumstances suit; while on each side of the river will be set a poppet-head, Which, having for its object the elevating and , carrying of the tram, will be stayed by removable anchors with tackles for the purpose of lifting or lowering the cradle to the depth required for dredging the wash. The cradle will be passed to and fro by means of a wire warp and chains connected at each end (or, if need be, at one end only), passing over a pulley block near the top of the poppet-heads and thence to the foot, bo as to be either wound on a drum or drawn away by horsepower in whatever direction is available. Mr CockweH says that the wash stuff may either be shovelled entirely or separated by the cradle dredge and the material brought ashore or tipped in the river from the deck of the cradle, the gold and finer material being retard within a false bottom. The rough material may also be i forked away by a flexible framed fork attached , under the railway, which may be driven to and fro in removing the stuff for the river to pass •way or in elevating it to the current of the river. Inside the cradle, between the bottom and the perforated decking, which screws on and o£f aB desired, may be placed plush or copper plate, or else the space may be left bare with a removable plug at the near end, and after the deck has been put mto position to be self- delivering the plug may be removed for the purpose of cleaning out the cradle, and by the application of-water the concentrates may be discharged into a tank or into boxes. Mr Cockerell claims for the advantages of the cradle that it reduces friction to a ' minimum, that it may be driven from any distance by light winding engines, that the weight for transit is much less than that of the ordinary dredging gear, that the plant may be erected in ft few hours alter delivery, and that it is not liable to injury in floods. The cradle may be made in sizes varying from what a miner could carry on bis shoulder to such ft size as to be able to shift 50 tons, and the total weight of the plant complete will range from one ton and a-half to four tons. Mr Thomas Callender reports 12oz 14dwt of gold from the Matakitaki Gold Dredging Company (Limited) for 103 hours' dredging. Mr Jabez Burton reports :—" The Roxburgh dredge washed up for the woek lOoz gold. The Bttrick dredge did not wash up; shifting on account of high river." A Lyell correspondent telegraphs that in the Lyell Creek Company's mine Git has been driven on the reef for the week, making a total distance gince starting from the tunnel of 31ft. The reef is about sft wide, intermixed with pug. Mr Peter Barr, secretary to the United Hercules Hydraulic Sluicing Company (Limited), has received the following telegram :—" 18 days, 220z Sandhill. Chid Mining Company (Limited) reports 30oz 3dwt of gold for four and a half day's dredging. Mr Thomas Callender reports:— 51oz Bdwt 10gr letorted gold from the Sew Hoy Big Beach Gold Mining < Jompany (Limited) from two dredges for past week ending Saturday, the loth inst. The Buller (late Alexander) dredge commenced work last week, and is reported to be dome well. •The old Alexander Company is in liquidation, and upon the deputy official assignee applying for the books and papers last Thursday he was Informed by the legal manager that they had all been stolen. The manager's office had bean foraiblr entered by weans of a crowbar.

The last trash-up of the Consolidated Company, Blue Spur, resulted in a return of HOOoz of gold. The facilities for working during that period, such as the supply of water, Ac, were very goodmuch better than they had been for some time, in fact,— and th« returns were consequently very satisfactory. Mr Jack* on is of opinion that if favoured by such circupistances us would permit of the maintenance of similar returns fora couple of year*, the directors would be in a position of declaring a dividend. There are at prt-sent about 47 men employed in the claim. — Tuapeka Times. Hyde and party's dredge record for the week ending 30th November was 350z for three days' dredging. Last week the dredge, owing to the height of the river, was unable to work on the run of gold in the claim, and the wash-up was only lOoz. — Dunstan Time 3.
