CANTERBURY COLLEGE BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

Christohorch, December 16. The conference convened by the Canterbury Progressive Liberal Association to consider the constitution of the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College wan held yesterday. Tuirtyseven local bodies, school committees, and societies were represented. Motions were carried that the constitution of the board is extremely unsatisfactory because there is no representation of the people of Canterbury, to whom the endowments belong and from whom the revenue of the college is dmved ; protesting against the governors being elected for life, and exprsßHing the opinion that the i ffice should be held for a period not exceeding three years ; that the board should bu elected so as to give the people a greater share of representation thereon than at present ; that the work in the H'gh Schools and Canterbury College oufcht not in any ra3e to overlap or duplicate the work of the primary schools, but should be strictly supplementary thereto, aud that no child should be received into the High Schools I without having paBBed an examination equivalent to passing the Sixth Standard iv the primary schools ; tbtit copies of the reaolutions be forwarded to the Government and members of the House of Represeutativea, and that the Minister for Education be renpectiully urged to introduce legislation early iv the next session of Parliament, in order to effect the desired Alterations. A committee was appointed to draft a scheme of alterations in the constitution of the board, to be submitted to the ! various bodies invited to take part in the present conference.

An incident illustrating the Premier's promptitude occurred at Waiuku. In the mom« ing at breikfast Mrs Waterman, the licensee's wife, trod ou a match, the result being that her clothing instantly took fire, the lining of the dress being apparently very inßammable. Th« flame ran nipidly, and the Premier, instantly recognifiing the danger, sprang to the woman'i ainiatance before others noticed the occurrence and speedily extinguished the fire. His handt were slightly scorched during the operation. The Premier's prompt action undoubtedly saved her from being severely burned.
