TELEGRAMS PROM THE PREMIER.

A.B soon as Inspector Hickion ascertained .the facts regarding the accident, he at once telegraphed information to the Hon. Mr Seddon, and stated also that) he had arranged to send Sergeant Gamble and six constables to the scene of the disaster. About 10 o'clock the Hon. Mr Seddon replied as follows :— v Exceedingly sorry to hear of the appalling accident ; arrangements as telegraphed are satisfactory; ccc that every a?siitance is rendered."

The following telegram was receired by the mayor, Mr J. J. Holland, from the Hon. R. Seddon : — " Have just heard from Inipeotor Hickson about the wreck of the Wairarapa and terrible loss of life. Convey my sincere sympathy to the sufferers, and wire me if auytjoing c»n be done. Government will be prepared to render every assistance." Mr P. A. Phillips, town clerk, replied as follows : — " I am directed by the mayor to acknowledge receipt of your telegram of sympathy. A great proportion of the passengers are in an absolutely destitute condition. Consequently some aid will be invaluable." Mr Henry Palmer received the following telegram on Thursday from the Premier :—" You are authorised to procure whatever coffin* are available for the interment of the dead from the wreck cf the ill-fated Wairaraps. I have requested Inspector Hickson to render you every assistance.

The inspector of police has received a telegram from the Hon. R, Seddon, stating that if any of tho relatives of the miss'ng persons wißh to go down to hop to identify the dead, ho will make ih& necessary arrang<.rnents for their passage.
