Fewer matches have been arranged this season, but a special effort will be made to keep each engagement, and it is quite open for clubs affiliated to the association to arrange farther matches among themselves. At a meeting of the O.L T.A. Committee it was considered very desirable that the annual tournament should be held on sncoesßive days, but after full consideration it was found that the selection of two Saturdays was unavoidable. The above are tho ruafcrhes arranged for the s'-nson. and it is much to be hoped that clubs will make sn effort to keep all the engagements. Ono country club has been so disappointed at rot ge'titig matches with town clubs in the past thafc it his decided to retire from the association mußntime. This course, however, I venture to say, is a mietnke, for ib can only serve to m*ke matters worse, and the members will be thrown on Ihcir own resources more than evf r. The Ofcago chnmflonship meeting again falls on two Saturdays. I think it would have been better to have selected Dunedin Cup week, but no doubt the committee had the matter tbor"Ughly threshed ont. The New Zealand championship mect'ng 11 to take place in Chris*-- Lurch t> U year, and the d»-te-< will likely be Oh'islin*s week as usual. No d->ubb a number of Duncdiu players will compete. On Saturday morning a heavy fall of rain occurred, and although before midday the weather cleared nicAy it quits prevented play on gra»B courts, and the Carisbrook opening was consequently postponed. It was perhaps as well, for we are not likely soon to forget how boisterously the afternoon ended. A church built as a memorial of Charts* Haddon Spurgeon is almost completed at Leibb. The building will be opened by th© Rev. Charles Spurgeon. The R?v. Father Morripgey, formerly of Westport, died at AVellington on Monday. Deceased had been ailii.g for a considerable tinu>, and lately m-ide a trip (o Ky-'nt-y for the btutiib of his health. H«) suffered from v weak he>trt. At Amberley. Canterbury, on the 25 h alt., before Mr H. W. Bishop, J?.M., David Tojaph Scott, boardinghouse-keeper at Cheviot, was convicted on two charges of sly grog-selling, and fl ed £25 on one and £5 on the ether* The magistrate commented severely on the evidence for the defence, and said he »hould Beriously consider the matter of ordering a prosecution for perjußr anainat Scott and one of his witneeiaa.
