WAIKAKA VALLEY
October 9.— The weather has been very fine since the beginning of the month. Afew farmers finished sowing last week, and it is probable that this work wdl be completed on every farm during the present week. There is a large area under oats, but the area under wheat and barley is infinitesimal. A good deal is being laid down to grass, principally with the crop of oats, but on a few fatmßf atmß paddocks are being laid down without a crop. The pasture is good at present. Clean Seed.— A number of farmers got their seed oats specially dressed at Gore this season. A neighbour showed me a sample the other' day. Nearly all the grains were of the same size, and wild oats were entirely absent. An inspection of the "seconds" separated from the bulk was enough to convince one of the importance of another dressing after leaving the threshing machines, and to appreciate the enterprise of the Gore firm, which has fitted up machinery for dressing seeds of all descriptions.
