Battcrv returns for the week : — Sir Francis Drake, 2640z amalgam from 284 tODB ; Big River, 112oz gold from 90 tons ; 'Cumberland tribute, 83Joz gold from 87 tons. Reefton, October 8. Saturday's midday quotations :— Big River, 12s 9d to 13s 3d ; Cumberland, 3s 6d to 3s 9d ; Cocksparrow dredg«, 2s Cd to 3s ; Globe, 4s to 5s ; Hercules, 2s to 2s 3d ; Progress, 14s to 153 ; Sir C. Russell, Is 9d to 2s ; Alpine, 10s 6d to 11s 6d ; Wealth of Nations, Is to Is 6d. The Drake mine was shut down on Saturday, and all hands turned off.
SURPRISE MINE, NENTHORN.
Mrs Silk reports that her manager of this mine (Mr Mills) has arrived in town from Nenthorn with a cake of gold weighing 740z, which was on view at the Leviathan Hotel on Friday.
DISCOVERY OF COPPER.
Hokitika, October 6. An important discovery has been made on the middle branch of the Kokatohi, a tributary of the Hokitika river. The reef is Bft wide, consisting of peacock ore and manganese.
WEEKLY RETURNS.
Mr Thomas Callender reports lOoz 18dwt of gold from the Matakitaki Gold Dredging Company (Limited) for past week ending Wednesday, the 3rd inst.
A Westport telegram states that the Shamrock Gold Mining Company's yield for the fortnight is 720z 7dwt retorted gold. The secretary of the Miller's Creek Gfld Dredging Company (Limited) reports 19oz of gold for last wetk's dredging The .Secretary of the Dunedin Gold Dredging Company (Limited) received the following telegram from the dredgemaster on Saturday :—: — " Dredging four days for 360z gold." A Lyell telegram states that the return from the Cocksparrow dredge is 30oz amalgam for 80 hours' dredging. Mr Thomas Callender reports 670z 2dwt lOgr retorted gold from the Sew Hoy Big Beach Gold Mining Company (Limited), from two dredges, for past week ending Saturday, the 6th inst. Mr Jabez Burton reports :—" The Roxburgh Gold Steam Dredging Company OAmit*A\ washed
up for week ending Saturday, 6th inst., 920z Bdw* 18*r gold, value £355 6s. The Bttrlck Gold Steani Dredging Company washed up for a similar time 1 lloz Zdwt 3gr gold, value £12 153. The secretary of the Sandhills Gold Mining Company (Limited) reports lloz 16dwtl6gr of gold for last week's dredging. Prospects improving. The manager of the Roxburgh Amalgamated Company reports for the past month that tha elevators have been kept constantly at work, and that the prospects continue to improve. Tho gold returns for the month are 2630z. Aft tho monthly meeting of the directors, helct on the 3rd, a dividend of 6d per share was declared, and made payable on the 22nd inst. After payment of the dividend the profit and losft '. account will be about £1200 in credit.
