A meeting of the Stirling and Inch-Clutha Anglers' Association was held on Saturday, September 1, to receive the general report and balance sheet for 1893-94-. The balance sheet, which was adopted as read, showed a credit balance of £2 Is 7d. The President of the society saidhe had a plea; ant duty to performin presenting the society's gold and silver medals to the anglers making the largest aggregate in the five competitions during the season. 'J ' -ommittee acknowledged with thanks the receipt ot trophies presented to the society by Messrs Sargood, Sod, and Ewen, New Zealand Hardware Co . Oiago Acclimatisation Society, Wilkie and Co , and Mr George Anderson, vice-pre sLif nfc of the society. A discussion on the best rne-ns of stocking the river with fresh snp ( ,lies of trout was gone into, various opinions being ventilated. The conclusion arrived at was that tbr tu-sfc plan would be for the Otago Acclimatisation Society to, keep j oung fish in the Clinton ponds until they were 12 months old, and then liberate them in the most favourable places. It is quite evident that something will have to be done soon, or trout fishing here v»ill be a tLing of the past. I think that I am correct when I state that the Acclimatisation Society never put any fish in the river, always depending on a supply from the creeks. I don'o think that the society can afford to ignore us altogether, as the sale of licenses •from Balclutha to Kaitangata totals up a good round sum year after year, and if they are not alive to their own interests, they will find the license fees getting smaller by degrees and beautifully less. — Correspondent.
Harry Dunn, the well-known New Zealand wrestler, has recovered from the accident he met with through a fall of stone in a mine in which he was working. At a recent match in Montana, U.8.A., between Dunn and E. Stone, champion of Montana, the ex-Danedinite threw his opponent five times in succession, Cumberland style.
Flack, a Victorian, has won the two-mile running championship of New South Wales, his time being lOaiin 6sec. Owing to Saturday's rain the bicycle carnival will not be concluded until the 15th.
At the Garrison Hall, on Thursday evening, Staff Sergeant-major Richardson delivered a lecture on "Projectiles, &c," to the members of the Dunedin Engineers. Th- -,ture, which -was of a most interesting »• instructive nature, inoluded a full description of the various kinds of shot and shell used by artillery and their particular uses, the different branches of the artillery service, and the various guns in use. The instruction was well illustrated with diagrams, models, ice, and was specially arranged for the purpose of showing the defence necessary to be provided agaimt the various kinds of artillery fire and the penetration of projectiles. The Otago Golf Club held its monthly competition for the club's cross on Saturday. Owing to the recent rain the course was very heavy, otherwise the weather was pleasant enough for the game. From several causes there was not quite so large a field of players as usual, but as it was a goodly number put in an appearance. At the end of the round it was found that, by a coincidence, Mr C. W. Rattray, Dr Shand, and Mr M. S. Todd, each receiving a handicap of 4 strokes, had tied for first place with 87 net (91—*). Mr F.-Stilling (10 strokes) came next with 8B (98—10). followed by Mr G. Todd, jun. (2 strokes), with 89 (91—2). The latter player hasi n a long series of competitions almost invariably done the round in 90 or 91. The tie for the medal will be played off at sons i early date. The fol'owing are the details o! i ; >f! ' scores, players not mentioned being over ICO neb or not returning caids :—: — Gross.
