BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION TRUSTEES.

The regular weekly meeting of the Benevolent Institution Trustees was held on'the af terncon of the sth, and was attended by Messrs Roberts (chairman), Hayneß, Chisholm, Gourloy, Solomon, and Isaac— Accounts amounting to £546 1b 2d were passed for payment.— The Secretary reported that two old men named William Brettoll and DavicJ Dubois had died in the Institution. — Tho Visiting Committee reported on the recent fire at the institution, and recommended that a claim be made as for total loss. — Approved. — The monthly out-door relief book showed that tho number of cases was 440, representing 173 men, 349 woman, and 949 children. The cost was £133 10s 6d per week. For the corresponding month for last year the number of cases was 415, representing 163 men. 328 women, and 907 children, the weekly cost being £123 8s Cd. It was pointed out that the last month showed an increase of 10 men, 21 women, and 42 children, or 73 in all, at an increased cost of £10 2a per week. — Mr Solomon, addressing the chairman, said he (the chairman) had been absent for some weeks, and the trustees had been inundated with new cases, so it >vaa not at all strange that theie was an increase.— Mr Ohisholji said the cases were of a very pressing order, and the trustees could not do otherwise than give relief.— Mr Solomon mentioned that hd did not remember so many cases ever coming before them previously as they had had during the past three or four weeks. The same state of things existed all over the colony. — The CiuiRMAN referred to the Btate of things mi Melbourne as being marvellous. He was making some inquiries as to the number of paupers, and found that in St. Kilda the number appaared to be in the same proportion to the public as in Dunedin, and this proportion ran through all the other districts. — The tender of J. E. "White, for the erection of a morgue and stable, at a cost of £124 10s Id, was accepted.— Mr Wales to be Instructed to take steps .to commence the work at once.— The relief cases, numbering about 80, were then considered.
