ARRIVAL OF THE RAPID.

Rapid, which came into Port on Friday forenoon, and went alongside the Bowen Pier., The Rapid is a partially armoured vessel, and is of 1420 tons register. She was built in Devonport in 1883, and is of the following dimensions :-Length. 200 f t; breadth of beam, 38ft; depth or hold, 14ft am. Her armament is a very effective one. She carries two Bin and 10 sin breech loaders, with 4 magazine guns, her engines are 140-horse power nominal, with a speed of 13 1 per hour. The officers of the Rapid are : Captain, Sir H. Ogle, Bart. ; lieutenants -E. Martin, N Hatchard, C. Bolton ; staff surgeon, M. S Sparrow ; paymaster, C. B. Alton ; engineer W. Chapman ; gunners— J. Blankley, O. C. Esquin • carpenter, John Elster. The Rapid will remain here for a few days and then proceed to the West Coast Sounds, where she goes to astertain if any vessels are working in the sealing trade. The Rapid comes into port in splendid order, and no doubt if Captain Sir H. Ogle will open his ship to inspection she will be filled with visitants • for ourselves, we must say she is in perfect order. She left Sydney on April 17 ; had variable weather, and reached Auckland on April 22nd ; after laying there for several days she left again for the south, call- . ing at Tauranga ; had moderate weather down the coast and arrived at Port Chalmers as above.
