The caremony of presenting the freedom of the C;ty of Lindon to Sir George Williams, founder of the Young Mek's Christian Association, took place at Guildhall to-day. Seventeen hundred delegates from the Young Men's Christian Association Cjuference were present. Sir George Grey denies that Mataafa was harshly treated in Samoa. The House of Commons, by a majority of 101, adopted the principle of graduated taxation, as proposed in the new income tax and succession duties. Mr Johnston, the British Commissioner, reports that he has defeated the Mankapira, and inflicted a deathblow on the Blave trade in Nyassaland. He also states that Australians are beginning to prefer Central Africa to Paraguay. Sir J. Thompson, Sir A. P. Oaron, Messrs Bowell and Foster, all members of the Ministry, will represent Canada at the conference. Germany has declinpd to assent to the Congo Treaty. M Dupuy intends to act in the old French spirit. He will not permit priests to interfere in politics and declines to accept the Pope's orders. Jane 6. The Hon, Mr Playford, Agent - general for South Australia, had an interview with the Marquis of Ripon qn the subject of the salary to be paid to acting-Governors, and urged that the interregnum after Lord Kintore's departure should be rather longer than usual. Lord Ripon said he could not commit himself to an expression of opinion until the question arises. Constantinople, Jane 6. The Turkish Government have issued a conversion loan of eight millions. Calcutta, June 5. A microscopic test of the alleged treesmearing proves that 90 per cent, of the marks aie the result of cattle rubbing against tress, and that the remainder were caused by mendicants who desired to create a scare. New York, June 5 Strikers lying in ambush shot four miters in Powe}lton. Virginia. A number of men on strike in Farmersburg, Indiana, attempted to wreck, by m^ans ot dynamite, a train carrying the militia. The latter opened fire and killed four men. June 6 The miners' strike in the Cripple Creek district has been compromised on the basi3 of eight hours a day and 3dol wage. Victobia (8.C.), June 5. Floods resulting from the Fraser river overflowing its banks drowned 100 people.
