MANIOTOTO DOG CLUB.

Judges : Messrs R. S. Charters, W. Davis, and R. Shaw. Stewards : Messrs C. Inder, A. Inder, T. Andrew, E. Wells, H. Little, W. Shaw, and R. Trotter. Secretary and treasurer : Mr H. H. Kirkpatrick. The second annual trial, under the auspices of the above club, was held at Closeburn station on May 24 and 25. The weather on the first day was rather cold, but not sufficiently so to interfere with the attendance, which included a fair sprinkling of ladies, who seemed to take a lively interest in the various events. The secoad day was splendid in the forenoon, but turned very cold towards evening. The following is an account of the various events :: — • Class I.— First prize, £5 ; second, £2 ; third, £1. For dogs of any age. Three sheep to have 440 yds start of dog, Sheep to be headed, brought back, and yarded. Time, 20min. Points : Four for heading, four for bringing back, four for yarding, and four for under command. A. M'K. Matheson's Toss, 16 points ... 1 C. Lockhart's Boy, 15 points 2 A. M'Lean's Spot, 14 points ... v . ... 3 The first dog to run was A. M'Lean's Spot. He cast off very well, but brought his sheep back to the yard rather hurriedly. He showed very good work at the yard, and was under very good command, and yarded his sheep in 18min ;— l4 points. W. Pringle's Chance headed his sheep in splendid style, but brought back rather fast, was in fair command, and was lucky in yarding his sheep in seven minutes ;—l3; — 13 points. C Burris's Fly crossed in heading, rung her sheep in bringing back to the yard, and succeeded in yarding two sheep in nine minutes ;— 4 points. R. Matheson's Tom headed in very fair style, and brought back and yarded in 12 minutes ;— l3 points. J. Wilson's Roy headed his sheep, but lost a lot of time in bringing back, and failed to yard ;— lO points. C. Lockhart's Wag lost a lot of time in heading his sheep, and scattered them in bringing back, and yarded two sheep in 14 minutes ;— 6 points. P. M'Kellar's Clyde was very slow in heading, brought back very steadily, but failed to yard ;— 10 points. A. M'K. Matheson's Dan crossed his sheep in heading, brought back fairly well, but failed to yard .—9 points. C. Lockhart's Boy headed his sheep fairly well, brought back in good style, showed good work at the yard, was in good command, and yarded in 18 minutes ;— ls points. J. Wilson's Rough headed fairly well, brought his sheep back roughly, showed fair work at the yards, was under good comvnand, and yarded in nine minutes ; — 12 points. W. Shaw's Roy headed in capital style, but scattered his sheep in bringing them to the yard ; — 8 points. G. R. Pollock's Roy headed fairly well, brought his sheep back to the yard in fair style, was under good command, but failed to yard ;— -11 points. A. Paterson's Joe headed very well, and brought his sheep back in fine style, showed good work at the yards, was under good command, but failed to yard ;— l2 points. W. Pringle's Bess, after a lot of trouble, succeeded in heading her sheep, but failed to yard. R. Matheson's Ned headed well, brought back rather hurriedly, but failed to yard. A. M'K. Matheson's Toss headed in grand style, brought back well, showed very fine work at the yard, was under very good command, and yarded in six minutes ;—l6; — 16 points. J. M'Leod's Bess headed splendidly, brought back very carefully, was under good command, but failed to yard ;— l2 points. J. M'Devitt's Spot headed his sheep in splendid style, brought back very carefully, was under good command, but failed to yard ; — 12 points. Class ll.— First prize, £3 ; second, £2 ; third, £1. For dogs of any age. Five sheep to be hunted away not less than 650 yds, and to be slewed at discretion of judges. Time, 15m in. Sheep to get 50yds start of dog. W. Shaw's Floss, 8 points 1 A. Matheson's Nell, 7 points 2 R. Matheson's Help was first to run. He hunted away steadily at first, and then slewed, but finally headed and brought his sheep back. A. Matheson's Nell showed very good work all round, and was well under command ;— 7 points. A. Patterson's Laddie hunted away fairly well, and slewed to the left, but failed to slew to the right, and eventually headed and brought his sheep back. W. Davis's Don lost his sheep at the start. W. Shaw's Floss hunted her sheep away in grand style, showing splendid work all round, being under thorough control ;— 8 points. W. Pringle's Ndll hunted away steadily, but failed to slew, and headed and brought her sheep back. F. M'Gregor's Fox was a bit slack at starting, but put in some good work, until he headed and brought his sheep hack. P. M'Kellar's Skip showed more disposition to head than hunt away. A. M'K. Matheson's Dick hunted away nicely, but failed to slew. Class IV. — First prize, £4 ; second, £2 ; third, £1. Consolation for all non - prizetakers. • Three sheep to have 880 yds start of dog. Sheep to be headed, brought back, and held in ring to satisfaction of judges. Time, 20min. Points : Four for heading, four for bringing back, four for under command. W. Shaw's Roy, 11 points 1 P. M'Kellar's Clyde, 9 points 2 Matheson's Tom was first to hunt, but failed to find his sheep. Pringle's Chance headed very well, but was very slack in bringing back, and eventually lost his sheep. W. Shaw's Eoy cast out on the right, but headed on the left. He brought back his sheep very well, and steadied them in the ring, and was under very good command. Time, Bmin ;— ll points. M'Kellar's Clyde headed his sheep very well, but rang them in bringing back. He showed good work at the ring and was under good command. Time, 16min ;— 9 points. A. Paterson'B Joe headed his sheep, but failed to bring them back. J, M'Devitt's Spot failed to find his sheep. J. M'Leod's Bess headed her sheep very well, but lost them in bringing back. C.
