THE WOOL SALES.

London, May 1.

Tbe wool sales opened to-day with a catalogue of 11,660 bales. There was a large attendance, and competition was fair, especially between French and English buyers. Merinos were disposed of at par to a decline of 5 per cent, as compared with the rates ruling at last series. Crossbrcds were firm, except shabbier sorts, which showed a decrease of £<3.

The New Zealand Land Association (Limited) have reoeived , the following cablegram from their London office: — "Wool. — The sales opened fairly well. Since close of last sales, super, medium, and inferior greasy merino are par to £d per lb lower ; coarse crossbred, market easier ; other descriptions unchanged. Wools of a faulty character are neglected. Attendance of Home and foreign buyers is normal. > The total quantity available, including wool held over from last series, is 478,000 bales, 90,000 bales of which have been forwarded to manufacturing districts direct."

Messrs Dalgety and Co. have received the following cablegram from their head office, dated London, May 1: — "Wool sales opened; good selection of wool ; large attendance of buyers ; competition fairly animated. Prices are nearly on a par with last series closing rates. Crossbred wools unchanged. Merinos scarcely ' maintained, especially inferior and faulty greasy qualities. Total available, includiDg old stocks, 390,000 bales."
