SOCIAL TO MR A. LEE SMITH.
About 50 of the residents of Green Island met on Friday evening (writes a correspondent) at the Commercial Hotel to do honour to Mr A. Lee Smith and wish him bon voyage on the eve of his departure as the New Zealand delegate to the Canadian Conference. Mr James Loudon occupied the chair. After the usual loyal and patriotic toasts, The Chairman proposed the toast of the guest of the evening, and in doing so referred to the high esteem in which Mr Lee Smith was held, and the services he had rendered the district, never sparing his purse or his time when an object was for the intellectual or socal welfare of the reeidents. Mr A. Lee Smith, in replying, thanked 'the chairman and those present for trie honour they had conferred upon him, and the pleasure they had afforded him in seeing so many of his friends together. He referred in general terms to the objects of the conference which he was about to attend, and rapidly reviewed his 13 years' connection with the district aud its industries. Mr R. H. Leary, in proposing the toast of "Colonial Industries," expressed regret that a press representative had not been invited to give them a record of the excellent speech delivered by Mr Lee Smith, who, he felt sure, would worthily uphold the honour of the colony as their delegate. Messrs 6. B. Smith and J. Bayley responded. The toast of " Parliament" was proposed by Mr Toomey, and responded to by Dr Will and Mr Galloway, and "Local Institutions" by Mr J. Miller, Messrs Samson and Duncan responding. A number of songs and recitations assisted in making the gathering a most enjoyable one.
