THE WAIAPU BISHOPRIC. Napier, April 25.

Great interest was felt in the special meeting of the Diocesan Synod for the election of a bishop. Only two names were mentioned as probable candidates—Archdeacon Leonard Williams (of Gisborne) and Dean Hovell (of Napier). After a good deal of prc'iminary discussion, chiefly on financial questions, it was proposed—"That the synod do now proceed to the election of a bishop." After a long debate a vote was taken. The laity were in favour of the motion, but the vote of the clergy was 13 for and 14 against, consequently the motion was lost. This practically hangs up the appointment of a bishop until the meeting of the new synod about September.
