ATHLETICS.

NOTES BY AMATEUR.

"Onlooker" telegraphs from Wellington on Tuesday .—Our Amateur Athletic Club has been hauled over the coals relative to its action in managing the Auckland Schools Athletic Association, whereby it lost £108. There can be little doubt that the conveners of the meeting had ample grounds for inquiry, and were studying the interests of the club 3. The conveners of the meeting thought that a cinder track might have been made, thereby placing the amateurs of Auckland on an equal footing with southerners— which idea I entirely coincide with. Futhermore, the A.A.A. aud C.C. should see to it at once.

The annual competition between the London Athletic Club and Oxford University was held on March 10. B jth path and tu'f were suffering from the effects of rain, and to some extent this explains the poorness of more than one performance. The London Club won by six events to four, the 100 yds Race being gained for them by A. Ovendon (time lO^ec), the Oje Mile Eaca by H. Wade (4min 34sec), the High Jump by R. Williams (who won at Sffc 6m and afterwards did 5f t; 8111), the Half-mile Race by E. C. Bredin (2min 1 3-53 ec), the Quarter-mile by A. Ovendon (53£ sec), and the Tnree-mile Race by H. A. .Munro (15min lsec). For Oxford, G. S. Robertson won the Hammer event with a throw of 101 ft lin ; T. G. Soott, beating G. B. Shaw on the flat, won the 120 yds Hurdles by a few inches (time 17£ sec) ; D. H. Meggy won the Weight-putting, his performance being 35ft ; and W. G. Oakley, the Long Jump with 19fb 6iin.

The annual inter-University sports were held on March 17, and resulted in Oxford winning six events out of sine, the seconds being equal or practically so. The best performance at the meeting was in the Mile Race, which W. E. Lutyens won in 4min 19 4-ssec, the fastest ever done at tbe sports. W. H. Greenhow, who was second, completed the distance in 4min 22sec, which has only onee — by W. Pollock Hill in 1890 — been beaten. Results :
