THE NORTH ISLAND MATCH.

Fiiisr Day—Monday, Fkbroaky 19. The match between the Sydney team and a North Island team was commenced on Monday at Wellington. The weather was uncertain in the morning, but cleared up, and a fair wicket was provided, though rather bare of grass and inclined to crumble. The ball got up unpleasantly ndw aud then, aud as it was evident the Brat use of the wicket would prove of considerable advantage. Davis was well pleased to win the toss aud go in. There was not at any time a large attendance. The visitors proved to be in good form and performed well with the bat. The scoring was very even, as out of the total of 220 Cowleys 38 was the highest innings. Mackenzie and Moore, both batting freely, put on 61 for the first wicket, but the former should have been caught off a hard drive early in the game. Apart from this there was nothing to fiud fault with in the fielding except want of dash. M'Danough was a failure with the ball, and Mills met with little success till he went on against the wind, when the wickets fell quickly. He came out with a very gooi average of seven for 70; but so far as could be seen there was not much in his bowling except that he maintained a good length. When the home team went in Cross hit up 22 in as many minutes with the help of a little luck. Mills, of Auckland, afforded a great contrast, as he remained at the wickets an hour and 40 minutes fo«r 26. M'Donough was not allowed to stay long enough to Bhow what he could do. Scores:—

Second Day—Tuesday, Febuuauy 20. The game was resumed in beautiful weather, and tho attendance was larger than on the previous day, but not big. Lusk and Mills made a capital stand, the former scoriDg rapidly, acd the latter playing a strictly defensive game. He was at leDgth got rid of for 40, which took him 2 hours and 20 minufces to make. Williams was badly missed, and then saved a follow-on by some clean hitting. The tail gave no little trouble, and took the score to 184 before the last wicket fell. When the visitors went in a second time Upham proved to be' well on the spot, and, assisted somewhat by a wicket which was inclined to be bumpy at his end, sent back man after man. Had not two chances been missed off him the score would have been a great contrast to the first day's batting; but, as it was, six good men went down for 88. Cowley then came to the rescue, and by some determined hittiDg restored the balance of play. Austin bowled without any "devil"; and the Selding of the visitors was also off. Scores ; —
