In the match between Statesman and Honour, the latter was ridden by bis trainer, Will Whitburn, and broke the Australian record for two miles — 4min 57sec — the previous record being held by Statesman, which was beaten by s£sec. It is only six months ago that Honour was a maiden, and it reflects great credit on the trainer of this liver-coloured gelding that during that time he has raised it from obscurity to be possessor of the title of champion of Australia over two miles. Whether he will retain that title remains to be teen, as he is matched for £50 a-side against Mystery (the champion pacer) over a distauce of two miles, the match
to take place at Ascot on February 15. Honour is a chtstaut gelding by Honesty, dam by VonMoltke, Junior ; Honesty by Priam from a Chieftain mare ; You Moltke, Junior, dam by Daniel Boone. He baa staitcd 47 times, won 11 times, placed 10 times, and ran unplaced 26 times. Houcur is a powerful-looking animal, possessing a broad back denoting great weight-carrying power, and has a most intelli-gent-looking head. His owner, Mr C. Alexander, is a thorough enthusiast in trotting, and is one of the best known sports in Victoria. The trainer and rider of Honour is Will Whitburn, whose heart and soul is in the biz. He resides at Caulfield, where he trains a small school of trotters, and has the well-known mare Calista under his care. Whitburn is also familiar to all music hall goers as the most versatile and popular minstrel ever on the Australian stage. — ■Meb Hawk.
