Notes from Reef ton. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
" Reefton, February 18. The following are the mining returns for the past week :— Big River, 3630z amalgam from ltiO ton 3 stone ; Cumberland, 640z amalgam from 90 tons ; Progress, 83oz amalgam from 140 tons ; Hercules, 14loz amalgam from 70 tons ; Wealth of Nations, Bioz amalgam from 120 tons. The following are the midday quotations •— Big River, 10s 6d to lla ; Cumberland, 4s to 5s • Exchange, Is to Is 3d ; Dillon, 5d ; Globe, 4s 6d ; Hercules, Is to Is 9.1 ; Keep-it-Dark, Is 6d ; Lvell Creek, 23 to 2s 3d ; No. 2 Dark, 2* 3d to 2s 8d ; Progress, 13a ; Sir Charles Russell, Is ; Success, 5d ; Alpine, 22s to 23s ; Welcome United, Is 9d ; Wealth of Nation*, 2s ; Alexander Dredge, Is. The following is a synopsis of mine managerts' reports:— Big Kiver.— There is no change in the stopes above No. 4 level. The stone seams to be making eastward, and I will know more about it in my next report. The winze below No. 4 level has been sunk a further depth of 6ft. There has been a band of mullock running in the centre of the reef. The stone is again coming in on the western side, showing gold. The contractors started work on Thursday, driving a crosscut from No. 4 chamber. The winze below No. 2 level has been sunk a further depth of 6ft, making in all 32ft. There is water coming in from the western side of this winze, and it has every indication of making stone. I cleaned the plates for 3630z of amalgam from 160 tons of stone.
Dillon.— Since my last report I have extended the tunnel a distance of 12ft for two weeks. The track of the reef if 2ffc wide, and carries gold all the time in the black pug. The total distance of th« tunnel is 322 ft.
Welcome United.— During the week the drive has been extended 10ft, making the total distance north of the shaft 178 ft. In tbe face at present there are 2ft Gin of black slate and quartz, with a good foot and hanging wall. Monday next will finish with the men at the Homeward Bound tunnel, as all the machinery will then be outside Progress.— The wirze below No. 4 level has been sunk a further depth of 7ft for the week. The The stone is about 3ffrwide and shows gold. The main shaft has been sunk 7ft 6in. The ground still continues haid. The contractors commenced breaking out stone on Tuesday and have sent 59 tonß to the battery, but the stone at present being operated upon is of a very poor quality. We scraped the top plates to-day resulting in 83oz of amalgam from 140 tonß. Cutuberlaoa.—TUe No. 3 level baa been ex.-
