PALMERSTOX SALE.

Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report as follows:— W<: held our usual monthly sale at M'Kay's yards? Palmerston, yesterday (20th inst.), when there was a full entry of stock, rather more than 1000 crossbred sheep and 105 head of cattle being penned. There was a satisfactory attendance of buyers, considering that very many farmers are engaged with their harvest at the present time, and the whole of the stock forward changed hands at very full values. Four- tooth crossbred wethers realised from 10s 6d to Us; two-tooth crossbred wethers, 10s ; two-tooth halfbred wethers, 8a to 9s ; farm crossbred lambs, 7s 6d ; cull crossbivd lambs (off tussock), 4s 3d ; and one smaU lot of very old merino ewes, Is. For cattle the following prices were obtained :— Half and three parts fat three and four year-old bullocka, £6 to £7 3i ; 12 to 18-months old steers and heifers, £3. <Js to j£3 Ss 6d ; dry cows, £1 Ss 6d to £6 ; and cows coming to calve up to £7. The sale was tie best that has been held in the di 3 trict since last autumn, and a much larger number of crossbred wethers and cattle than was forward could readily have been placed.

In concluding an appeal on the necessity of ministers setting an example in temperance a member of the Presbyterian Assembly said : " For the sake of others, for tbe sake of weaker brethren, we should give up the cup we love !" The members were highly amused, but the speaker failed to see where the laughter came in.
