Dauvit, the Cud.
In the parish of X , near Campbelltown, in Scotland, there lived a woman who owned as a pet animal a donkey, which went by the name of " Dauvit." If perchance this animal escaped out of her sight for even a short space of time you would see the good woman outside looking very anxiously for her stray pet, often shouting out at the top of her veice, "Dauvit," 44 Dauvit," 44 Dauvit, the Cud." One day, however, poor Dauvit was laid very low by sickness. His faithful mistress, after exhausting her skill and energy in trying to ease his'great pains.'and apparently without any immediate result, resolved to call ia the parish minister, thinking that his prayers would tend to soothe her suffering pet. The minister arrived in due course, and was ushered into one of the rooms by the good woman herself, and after explaining to the minister the great agony Dauvit was in, asked him if he would offer up a short prayer that her Dauvit might be relieved. The minister, thinking that the good woman referred to her husband (whose name was David), offered prayer that relief might be sent to him, and that the breadwinner of the family might be restored to his sorrowing wife and children. After prayer had been offered, the good minister aeked if he might be allowed to see the suffering man. Words cannot describe the indignation and wrath of the minister on being informed that it " wasna her quid man he was praying for, but just her pet animal, 4 Dauvit, the cud.'" — Jacobus.
